Melanie Margaret Kirsch (Smith), born Jan. 26, 1954, found peace on Nov. 1, 2013, knowing she seized every day, left the world a better, more interesting place, and lived a life filled with love.

Melanie had a magnetism and a radiance that was hard to define, yet impossible to forget. She was striking, gregarious and a masterful storyteller. She had a wild sense of humor, an unrestrained and infectious laugh, and she delighted in her ability to send a room into fits of joy and laughter.

Valerie ‘Toni’ Newton

Valerie “Toni” Newton of Eagle River died Friday, Nov. 15, 2013, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff.  She was 78.

Mrs. Newton was born Oct. 15, 1935, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of Pauline and James Schultz.

She was raised and attended schools in Chicago. It was there that she married Earl Newton June 12, 1954.

She was employed by the Carlson Pharmaceutical Co.

Irma L. Pitlik

Irma L. Pitlik, age 87, of Eagle River, Wis., formerly of Sugar Camp, Wis., died on Friday, Nov. 15, 2013.

She was born on Feb. 1, 1926, in Eagle River, the daughter of John and Anna (Wiebe) Spiess.

Irma was raised on a farm and attended schools in Eagle River.

On Oct. 11, 1945, she was married to Joseph Pitlik in Sugar Camp.

Jane Powell

Jane Powell, a lifelong resident of St. Germain, died Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013, at her home. She was 83.

Mrs. Powell was born March 30, 1930, in Rhine­lander to Malcolm and Margaret (née Hoffman) Powell.

She owned and operated the Greenwood Ranch in St. Germain for many years.

Lois was born in Chicago, on March 20, 1935, to Eva and William Cleveland. She was an only child.

Ione Kringel Lumley

Ione Krin­gel Lumley, formerly of Eagle River, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Regency Retirement Village in Jackson, Tenn. She was 85.

Mrs. Lumley was born in Eagle River to Hubert and Elsie (née Wilson) Kringel. She married her husband, Robert L. “Bob” Lumley, April 21, 1951.

She was a retired secretary for General Electric Research and a member of West Jackson Baptist Church where she was a member of the Women’s Mission Union and a Sunday school teacher.

Karl E. Miller joined his Lord on Nov. 8, 2013.

Karl is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Evelyn (Reed); and his four children, Karla (Dean) Lederhaus, Kurtis (Karen) Miller, Kyle (Linda) Miller, Krystal (Tom Preston) Miller; and seven grandchildren.

Karl was born Oct. 10, 1937, to Kenneth and Gertrude (Heiden) Miller in Freeport, Ill.

George Petts Jr.

George Petts Jr., a long-time resident of Eagle River and Crandon, died Nov. 10, 2013, in Rochester, Minn.  He was 76.

Mr. Petts was born Jan. 6, 1937, in Eagle River to  George Sr. and Christine (née Thomas) Petts.

He was a member of the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians and served in the U.S. Army.

Steven A. Pulec, age 57, of St. Germain, passed away on Monday, Nov. 4, 2013, at his home surrounded by family.

Clarence A. White

Clarence A. White of Evansville, Ind., passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013. He was just several months away from 102.

Born in Robinson, Ill., on June 9, 1912, Clarence was a schoolteacher in a one-room schoolhouse, teaching grades 1-8.

After eight years teaching he changed careers,  becoming a meteorologist with the U.S. Weather Bureau.
