The Three Lakes School District and Three Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center Inc. will continue work on its new electronic message center at Cy Williams Park by offering personalized plaques and bricks in exchange for donations.

The two entities have entered into a partnership to construct the state-of-the-art sign, which provides an opportunity to view most area events on a continuous basis.

The Three Lakes Women’s Club is busy preparing for its annual Scholarship Luncheon and Fashion Show that will be held Sept. 17 at the Reiter Center. Wisconsin sportscaster to tell tales at historical society event Aug. 12

The Three Lakes Historical Society will host Jessie Garcia, one of the first female sportscasters in the Midwest, for an evening of tales from 20 years covering Wisconsin’s sports teams Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 7 p.m. at the Reiter Center in Three Lakes.

Garcia will tell stories from the sidelines of Packer preseason games to Super Bowl showdowns and into the host chair of the Mike McCarthy show.

Community garden
Three Lakes Community Garden held an open house Sunday, as visitors toured the garden and sampled treats prepared with produce grown in the garden. Several gardeners were on hand to talk about their gardening experiences and provide tips for successful gardens. In addition to plots that are rented out to community members, the garden has 10 plots that are dedicated to the Three Lakes Christian Food Pantry.  —Photo By Jan Hintz

Welsh Festival of Songs set at church Aug. 10

Three Lakes Union Congregational United Church of Christ will present a Welsh Festival of Sacred Songs, also know as the Gymanfa Ganu, Sunday, Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. The program will take place in the sanctuary of the church located at 6993 Forest St.

Rev. Joseph Corbin of First Presbyterian Church of Reedsburg will direct this event and Lori Hunter and Merilyn Penn will provide organ and piano accompaniment.

The Gymanfa Ganu is an interdenominational gathering of people who enjoy singing traditional hymns. This was a custom established by the Welsh in their homeland and brought to America by Welsh pioneers.

Women’s club to hold bring-a-friend meeting

The Three Lakes Women’s Club will meet Wednesday, Aug. 20, at the Three Lakes Center for the Arts.

Those attending the special bring-a-friend meeting should meet at the theater at 1 p.m. to watch the movie “Philomena” staring Judi Dench. The movie is free of charge and refreshments may be purchased at the concession stand.

Center for Arts to host NASA?theater event

The Three Lakes Center for the Arts will host the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Earth Science Electronic Theater as it is set to present “Looking at Earth From Space: An Evening of Visualtions of the Planet we call Home” by Dr. Fritz Hasler.

Hasler, NASA emeritus research scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center, will present the program Friday, Aug. 15, at 6:30 p.m. at the center.

The event is free, but seating is limited and there is no reserved seating.

Planning performances
The Three Lakes School/Community Arts Association (TLSCAA) has been busy planning for its 2014-’15 season. Oneida Health Department offers program for pregnant smokers

The Oneida County Public Health Department is now offering a free program to pregnant women in Oneida County to assist them with quitting tobacco smoking.

“It is no secret that breaking an addiction to nicotine is extremely difficult, especially when adding the stress of a pregnancy or a new baby to the house,” said Dawn Klink, Oneida County’s public health nurse and coordinator of the First Breath Program.

Demmer sets Smokey Bear event

The Edward U. Demmer Memorial Library in Three Lakes will welcome the public to a free program on Smokey Bear Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the lower level of the library.

The program will be presented by Catherine Koele, a wildfire prevention specialist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. She will discuss the history of the real Smokey Bear. The program will also include information about fire prevention.
