School announces Hot Reads winners

Six Northland Pines-St. Germain Elementary school students were accompanied to Knockers Pizza Co. in St. Germain by chaperones Fire Chief Tim Clark, Amy Warrick, Special Education teacher and John Vojta, a volunteer St. Germain fire fighter Wednesday, Nov. 13.

The children were treated to a ride in a fire truck and lunch as a prize for reading the most minutes in their respective classes in the Hot Reads program.

Library forgoes fines in place of donations

The Plum Lake Library in Sayner announced that fines will be waived through the holiday season with a food donation to the Vilas Food Pantry or a toy donation for the Northland Pines School District Cares Toy Drive. Collection boxes are located inside the library.

Some of the new holiday books at the library include “The Betty Crocker Christmas Cookbook,” “Big Book of Christmas Crafts,” “Martha Stewart’s Homemade Holiday Crafts,” “100 Crafts Under $10,” “Crafting with 4 Supplies” and our spiral book series “Gifts in a Jar.”

The library’s holiday hours will be Wednesday, Nov. 27,

Christmas Festival brings holiday shoppers to Sayner
Christmas Festival, a Christmas shopping event sponsored by Sayner area charitable groups, was held Nov. 16 at the Sayner Community Recreation Hall. The Plum Lake Woman’s Club provided chili and butternut squash soup as part of the à la carte luncheon at the festival. Shoppers descended on the Sayner Community Recreation Hall for the Christmas Festival, sponsored by charitable groups in the Sayner area on Nov. 16.

The event featured vendors of arts, crafts and handmade clothing,  as well as a hot lunch and pie.

The goal of the Christmas Festival was to help others through craft purchases and donations to the Plum Lake Library, the Plum Lake Woman’s Service Club and Salvation Army.

Northern Exchange feed store relocated to its new facilities located at  7792 Highway 70 E. in St. Germain and had a ribbon cutting and customer appreciation celebration Nov. 15 and 16. Northern Exchange was created in 2011 by Neal and Lisa Thomas who have backgrounds in farming and dairy. Many of the feed products sold in the store come from their 1,200-acre family farm in southwest Wisconsin where they raise 300 head of feeder cattle, and grow corn, soybeans, alfalfa, wheat, rye and sunflowers. PrimeTimers issue $7,100 in donations
The St. Germain PrimeTimers donated $7,100 to organizations Nov. 6 at the St. Germain Community Center. Members of St. Germain’s PrimeTimers met Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Community Center to distribute a total of $7,100 among 22 organizations.

The club raises funds through a variety of activities in the St. Germain community, which include ice cream sales at weekly flea markets from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Pie sale set this Saturday

The Friends of the Plum Lake Library will hold its annual pie sale at Christmas Fest Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or until the pies are gone, at the Sayner Community Building.

Bakers may drop off pies at the library, located at 8789 Peterson St. in Sayner, Friday, Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or at the community building, from 1 to 4 p.m.

A Christmas craft sale benefiting the Northwoods branch of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin (BBBSNW), was held Saturday, Nov. 9, at the St. Germain Community Center.

The event featured a visit by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, handcrafted items, gourmet foods, a hot lunch provided by BBBSNW and raffles for prizes held throughout the day.

Christmas Fest planned in Sayner this Saturday

The Plum Lake Woman’s Club will hold its Christmas Fest Saturday, Nov. 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Sayner Community Building.

The homemade soups and chili made by members of the club along with brats, sauerkraut, hot dogs and homemade pies provided by the Friends of the Plum Lake Library will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Raffles for items will be sold from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with the drawings beginning at 1:45 p.m.

Historical presentation set Nov. 19 at meeting

The St. Germain Women’s Service Club will gather for a luncheon meeting at the Community Building, Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 11 a.m.

Lunch will be served at noon, followed by a program presented by Nancy Minx of the Vilas County Historical Museum.
