Elementary school plans remodel
A meeting to discuss remodeling plans between Northland Pines School District representatives, contractors and an architect took place Oct. 10 at St. Germain Elementary School. Representatives of Northland Pines School District, contractors and architect met at St. Germain Northland Pines Elementary School Oct. 10 to compare proposed project blueprints to the actual building and discuss plans for the safety remodel scheduled for Christmas break.

The contractors will bid the job now that they have seen all of the district schools which will undergo the renovation.

Black Bear Lodge’s annual Oktobearfest slated Saturday

Black Bear Lodge in St. Germain will host its 14th annual Oktobearfest Saturday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the lodge’s lakeside grounds.

Festival attendees will have the opportunity to experience German tradition with a North?Woods twist.

Craft and art vendors will exhibit their works and offer them for sale.

Lions donate to library, local group
The St. Germain Lions Club donated to Plum Lake Library and Big-Brothers Big-Sisters Northwest region Oct. 14. Each received a $1,000 check. The St. Germain Lions Club presented two $1,000 checks at the Plum Lake Library in Sayner Monday, Oct. 14.

One check was donated to the library and the second to Big Brothers-Big Sisters of Northwestern Wisconsin.

Ida Nemec, librarian, and Dan Sukow, library treasurer, received the donation for the library which is to be used where the library board sees fit.

Sayner Treasure?Hunt raises money for library

The 48th annual Sayner Treasure Hunt was held Oct. 12 with 62 people participating.

“We decided to award prizes differently this year,” Joan Kazda, organizer of the event. “We awarded a first- and last-place prize.”

The money that organizers would have spent on prizes for other categories in past was donated to the Plum Lake Library elevator fund instead. The totals was $660.

The Women’s Service Club of St. Germain learned about collecting buttons from Marilyn Jennings of What Daddy Doesn’t Know... Antiques located in Minocqua Tuesday, Oct. 15, at the St. Germain Community Center.

Jennings has been collecting clothing buttons for 25 years and is a member of the Wisconsin State Button Society.

The St. Germain’s Women’s Service Club held its 35th annual Shades of Autumn style show and benefit luncheon at the Whitetail Inn in St. Germain Tuesday, Oct. 8, with 250 women in attendance.

Models from the club’s membership wore outfits from numerous local clothing stores which included CJ Banks, Wausau; Kohl’s, Rhinelander; Ross’ Plus, Ross’ Sportswear, J Christy’s and Just Because, all of Minocqua;

Committee takes up dog barking petition

Property owners of the Colona Estates subdivision and Steve White, owner of White’s Woods and Waters, attended the regular monthly meeting of the Planning and Zoning Committee of the St. Germain Town Board held Thursday, Oct. 10.

The committee considered a dog-barking petition that originated with Karl and Peggy Koehler and was signed by 10 neighbors from Henry Circle and adjacent property owners on Highway 70 West.

The petition was presented at a town board meeting Sept. 9 and forwarded to the Planning and Zoning Committee for study.

Elementary school participates in Fire Prevention Week events
As part of Fire Prevention Week, Glenn Svetnika, (standing far left) a member of the St. Germain Volunteer Fire Department, reminded students at St. Germain Elementary School that when fire strikes, they should crawl beneath the heat and smoke to get out of a building, and not go back into a burning building for anything. St. Germain Elementary School commemorated Fire Prevention Week with special programs Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 9 and 10.

Two fire drills were held Wednesday to remind students and staff what to do in the event of a fire.

Glenn Svetnika, Phil and Judy Kohout, members of St. Germain’s Volunteer Fire Department, ran the drills and reduced exit time from 5 minutes to 3½ minutes.

Chamber seeking new executive

The board of directors for the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce announced the formation of a selection committee in its search for a new executive director for the chamber.

Chamber Board President Ted DeRuiter appointed the committee that will be headed by Jim Anderson.

The board of directors has also retained Sharon Benda as the interim office manager until the executive director position is filled. Benda was the chamber office manager for Eagle River and St. Germain chamber offices for many years.

Library to host scarecrow fest this Saturday

The Plum Lake Library will host a scarecrow festival with stories, activities and a scarecrow-making contest Saturday, Oct. 19, beginning at 11 a.m. at the library.

Materials will be provided, but attendees may also bring clothes to dress scarecrows.

Preregistration?is required to ensure there will be enough materials for everyone.
