St. Germain Elementary held its quarterly Color Day celebration May 28. Color Day is a combination of positive reinforcement and a celebration for jobs well done by students and staff.

Katie Hauser’s 4-year-old kindergarten (4K) class designed award-certificates and selected staff members to receive the awards.

“Color Day is always about students receiving awards,” said Hauser. “The 4K class decided the staff should receive certificates showing appreciation for jobs done well and faithfully.”

Cathy Humbaugh, of First National Bank in St. Germain, gave the Parent/Teacher Organization (PTO) a $500 check, matching the first $500 raised by the children and the PTO through box-top coupons.

PTO Co-president Kristin Renkes received the check on behalf of the organization. The children turned in over 12,000 box tops which yielded $1,280.

“We are thankful to First National Bank for the additional $500. Children in Mrs. Stephens’ class won two challenges for turning in the most box tops. The children were treated to a pizza lunch donated by Knockers Pizza Co. in February,” said Renkes.

The Fourth Grade Citizenship Award went to Matthew Vedder. He was elected by secret ballot cast by his classmates.

Spang’s Italian Restaurant in St. Germain also issued pizza prizes to students who excelled in class work, and were courteous and helpful to others during the quarter.

Students were awarded a certificate accompanied by a coupon for a free pizza at Spang’s.

Other awards were given for student’s artistic creativity. Mr. Deditz announced the DKG awards for writing and illustrating a book which met strict criteria in composition.
