Lakes committee holds picnic for aquatic invasive species inspectors

St. Germain’s Lakes Committee hosted a picnic in the St. Germain Community Park July 23 to allow members of the committee and community to become acquainted with interns who inspect boats and trailers at Vilas boat landings for aquatic invasive species (AIS).

The inspections are part of an effort to keep lakes pristine, contain AIS to lakes which are already infected, to continue educating boaters about invasive issues and to gauge how well past educational efforts have impacted boaters.

Plum Lake Public Library in Sayner brought in registered dietitian and nutritionist Cheri Nemec to present “The Science of Food” July 24 as part of the library’s summer reading program, which focuses on science and aims to increase children’s interest in reading.

Through the program’s use of outdoor stations, children were able to experiment with different kinds of food and food-related chemistry.

Historic Phelps homes toured

The third annual Tour of Historic Phelps Homes, sponsored by the Phelps Historical Museum, was held June 28.

This year the Williams-Withington home and Dowling-Richards home, both on Long Lake, the Osterberg-Johnson home on Blong Road and Kerscher-Johnson home on Lac Vieux Desert were included.

Each host opened their homes and grounds for the tour and shared stories of its history.

Community members raise funds for child diagnosed with cancer

Members of the St. Germain community have come together to raise monies on behalf of 5-year-old Cameron Dahm who was diagnosed with stage 3, non-Hodgkin lymphoblastic lymphoma in March.

Cameron attended St. Germain Elementary School until he was unable to do so due to his illness.

He currently takes trips to Marshfield

Anne Small of St. Germain, presented “Fungus Among Us,” a program about mushrooms, at the Plum Lake Library in Sayner July 17 as part of the library’s summer reading program, which aims to instill a lifelong love of reading in children.
