Phelps Chamber of Commerce accepting gently used winter gear

The Phelps Chamber of Commerce is welcoming residents to drop off new or gently used coats, sweaters, hats, mittens and other warm clothing items as part of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism’s The Big Bundle Up campaign.

The statewide collection program will run through Jan. 4, 2014.

This is the third year of the program. Last year’s program collected more than 17,000 winter items to help warm up families in need.

Our Savior sets Xmas cantata

Our Savior Lutheran Church will hold its 2013 Christmas Cantata — “We Sing with the Angels” — under the direction of Steve Kolling Sunday, Dec. 15, at the 7:30 a.m. service and the 10 a.m. service.

The adult choir, jubilation choir, children’s choir, and Woodland Strings will perform. The performances will be open to the public.

Our Savior Lutheran Church is located at 223 Silver Lake Road in Eagle River.

Christmas concert
The Phelps School music department will present its Christmas concert Monday, Dec. 16, at 6:30 p.m. in the small gym. There will be performances by two hand-chime choirs, seventh- to 12th-grade band, sixth-grade band and choir. Four-year-old kindergarten through fifth grade will present the musical “ ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” by Teresa Jennings. Among the hand-chime performers will be, front row from left, Jackie Samuelson, Alexis Lucas, Andrew Gill, Destiny Schreiber, Marti Rudawski, Jena Rudawski and Michael Franzen; back row, Jacob Johnson, Nicole Fiebrantz, Robert Rosner, Brady Bierman and Taylor Huza. Blood drive set Dec. 16

The Phelps community will hold a blood drive Monday, Dec. 16, from 2 to 6 p.m. at St.?Mary’s Catholic Church, located at 4494 Town Hall Road.

Advance donation appointments may be made by calling Lola at (920) 227-5561 or by visiting save3lives.org.

Walk-ins are welcome but scheduling an appointment helps ensure a fast and convenient process.

Town of Phelps holds annual budget meeting

More than 100 community members attended the town of Phelps budget meeting and special meeting at the school last week, deciding by hand vote to reinstate $7,500 in funding to the Phelps Historical Museum.

Town Chairman Colin Snook went over the budget, pointing out line items that were changed.

Some of the items that were pointed out included $300,000 for capital outlay roads, which includes a stretch on Sugar Maple Road to South Shore Road; decreasing the budget to $20,000 for the Chamber of Commerce; cutting parks capital outlay; improvements and community development; and budgeting for the museum.

Snook opened the meeting up for questions and comments after the general meeting, and there were a number of comments about the museum.

Santa to visit Phelps Dec. 7

Santa will visit the Phelps area Saturday, Dec. 7, for the town’s annual tree lighting ceremony.

He will arrive on a Phelps Fire Department truck at 5 p.m. at the gingerbread house downtown.

Goodie bags will be provided to each child in attendance, and youths also will have the chance to win a five-foot holiday stocking stuffed with goodies donated by the Phelps Convenience Center.

Christmas Booyah Bazaar planned

Holiday Lodge & Supper Club in Phelps will host the Christmas Booyah Bazaar Sunday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Vendors, crafters, baked goods, homemade booyah and Santa will be featured at the event.

Donations such as bleach, blankets, cat or dog food for the Vilas County Animal Shelter and nonperishable food items for the food pantry will be accepted, along with monetary donations
