Geocache workshop scheduled at library

Rollie Alger and Arlyne Becker have scheduled a free Geocache workshop at Phelps Library Friday and Saturday, Aug. 16-17, from 9 a.m. to noon each day.

Those interested should take along a laptop, iPad or smart phone to access the internet and a global positioning system (GPS) device if available.

Neither item is necessary for the workshop, but they are necessary if participants plan to hunt for caches after completion of the workshop.

Historical museum featuring new display on Lesnik family

The Phelps Historical Museum is now featuring a new display on the Lesnik family, who made yearly trips to Kugler’s Resort on Big Sand Lake for 60 years.

The historical display will be featured for the rest of the month, according to museum member Jan Petrick.

Phelps School offers free, reduced price lunches

The Phelps School District recently announced its policy for families unable to pay the full price of meals served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program or milk for split-session students under the Special Milk Program.
Each school office and the central office has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by anyone interested.
Household size and income criteria will be used to determine eligibility.

Big Sand Lake Club plans Founding Fathers golf event

Big Sand Lake Club will sponsor the fourth annual charity golf tournament Sunday, Aug. 11, beginning at 11 a.m.

Phelps plans 16th Picnic in the Park

The 16th annual Picnic in the Park will be held Friday, Aug. 9, at Wavering Park in Phelps from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

The event, which has been moved from the usual Tuesday evening to Friday evening, will be held this year in memory of Don Ruck.

The meal includes barbecued chicken and ribs, plus an assortment of side dishes such as baked beans, potato salad, fresh fruit and choice of homemade desserts.

The Phelps Woman’s Club will meet Monday, Aug. 19, at member Sue Rapp’s home.

Rapp and Vickie Andersen will be the meeting hostesses. Rapp will deliver a presentation on Native American collectible items.

The inaugural Phound it in Phelps Geocache event recently was held at Wavering Park. Roland Alger and Arlyne Becker coordinated the event.

Phound it in Phelps had 15 registrants — individual or team — with 34 total participants. 15 caches were hidden throughout Phelps.

Lake association sets August Fest at Hillside

The Lac Vieux Desert Lake Association will sponsor the annual August Fest Sunday, Aug. 11, from noon to 4 p.m. at Hillside Resort off South Shore Road in Phelps.

The event will feature an all-you-can-eat feast including hamburgers, brats, hot dogs, fried fish, crayfish, gumbo, fries and coleslaw. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for youths age 10 and younger.

Disc jockey Dennis James will entertain with karaoke music.

Registration is now open for the Phelps Chamber of Commerce’s annual Colorama Try-athlon event slated for Saturday, Sept. 14, from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Try-athlon is a five-kilometer walk/run, bike and canoe or kayak event open to individuals or three-person relay teams.
