Women’s club plans meeting

The Phelps Women’s Club will hold a meeting Monday, Sept. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Phelps Fire House.

Hostesses are June Franzen and Donna Brand.

The agenda will include results of the Scarecrow Fest. Guests are welcome to attend.

Former pro basketball player highlighted at Hometown Reunion

Mary Elverson-Kismore will have a display set up at the Phelps Hometown Reunion Saturday, Sept. 14.

Elverson-Kismore, a 1959 Phelps graduate, played professional basketball for the Texas Cowgirls after graduation. She is the only Phelps graduate to become a professional athlete.

The Texas Cowgirls were a world-famous basketball aggregation made up of the top girl players in North America.

Scarecrow Fest set downtown Sept. 14

The fourth annual Scarecrow Fest sponsored by the Phelps Women’s Club will be held in Phelps Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors can see scarecrows and decorated pumpkins throughout town, and may enter their own creations or participate in the Largest Pumpkin Contest.

A craft fair is planned with a fine arts display. Several local artists and quilters will be displaying their works.

There will be music throughout the day presented

The Phelps Hometown Reunion for alumni, staff and anyone who has been involved with Phelps School is planned for Saturday, Sept. 14, in conjunction with Scarecrow Fest.

Tours will be available at the school from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. A buffet at Holiday Lodge for $25 a ticket limited to 150 people also will be offered.

A quilt raffle will be held with proceeds

Historical museum sets antique show Sunday

The Phelps Historical Museum will hold an antique show and sale this Sunday, Sept. 1, at the museum off Highway 17 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Smokey Bear will make an appearance during an open house at the museum, while root beer floats will be served for guests.

Other attractions will include a CCC?Camp reenactment, ethnic foods, music, wine and cheese.

After Labor Day weekend, the Phelps Historical Museum will be open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Raffle tickets will be available to purchase for $2 apiece or three for $5. First prize is $1,000, second is $300 and third is $200. The drawing will take place at 4 p.m. at the museum.

Snomo club sets brat fry

The Phelps Snowmobile Club will sponsor a brat fry, along with a pie and bake sale, at Trig’s in Eagle River Friday, Aug. 30.

The event is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. Proceeds will be used for Phelps area snowmobile trails.

Picnic in the Park raises $4,250 as more than 460 people attend
The Eagle II rescue helicopter from Green Bay made a surprise visit to the 16th annual Picnic in the Park. The helicopter, which hasn’t been able to make it to the event in past years, was arranged by NorthStar Health Systems.

More than 460 adults and children recently raised $4,250 at the 16th annual Picnic in the Park fundraiser event for the Phelps ambulance fund.

The event, sponsored by the Northwoods Living Care Foundation, was held at Wavering Park in Phelps and featured a chicken and ribs barbecue.

Blood drive set Aug. 22

The Phelps community will hold a blood drive Thursday, Aug. 22, from 2 to 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, located at 4494 Town Hall Road in Phelps.

Advance donation appointments may be made by calling Lola at (920) 227-5561 or by visiting save3lives.org.

Walk-ins are welcome, but scheduling an appointment helps ensure a fast and convenient process.

Blood donors must be at least 17 years old or 16
