Nominations open for parade marshal

The Phelps Chamber of?Commerce is seeking nominations for the Fouth of July parade marshal for 2014.

The only requirement is that the person (or couple) is a resident of Phelps. Nominations may be emailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Friday, June 13. They also may be dropped off at the chamber office.

Women’s club plans dinner, reschedules dues luncheon

The Phelps Women’s Club will sponsor a chicken dinner at Hillside Resort in Phelps Wednesday, June 18, from 4 to 8:30 p.m.

Tickets for adults will cost $10 and tickets for children 8 and younger will cost $6.

The meal includes chicken, potatoes, stuffing, cole slaw, roll, homemade dessert and milk or coffee.

Phelps graduates receive $14,000 in local scholarships

Phelps High School graduates recently received $14,000 in local scholarships at the 2014 awards ceremony.

Principal Jason Pertile presented academic awards and scholarships on behalf of numerous local organizations and businesses.  Scholarships and awardees include:

Kindergartners graduate

Honoring a hero
A service in Rhinelander renamed the road in front of the armory to Adams Way in memory of Sgt. Ryan Adams, who died on Oct. 2, 2009, defending the United States in Afghanistan. Sgt. First Class Lyle Spurgeon of Phelps (above) unveiled the street sign. Spurgeon, the patron sergeant, was injured at the same battle.                   —Photo By Sharon Gifford

Little Mermaid
Students at Phelps High School recently put on a performance of “The Little Mermaid” for more than 250 attendees. The cast included Jackie Samuelson as Ariel, Michael Franzen as Prince Eric, Dylan Kleinke as Sebastian, C.J. Crawford as Ursula and Nathan Cirese as King Triton. Members of the choir also performed, along with students in fourth and fifth grades. All were under the direction of instructor Kim Johnson. The costumes and sets were designed by Mickey Santy. Hall of Fame induction set

The Rev. Gary Spurgeon and Maxine Drager will be inducted in the Fighting Knights Hall of Fame Saturday, May 24, at the Phelps High School graduation ceremony at 2 p.m.

An open house with refreshments honoring Spurgeon and Drager will be held in the Phelps School commons area after the graduation.

Historical museum to open May 30

The Phelps Historical museum will open for the season Memorial Day weekend and will be open Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days.

New displays have been arranged. The new hours of operation will be Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursdays from 4 to 8 p.m.
