Golf tourney planned at Big Sand Lake Club

Big Sand Lake Club will sponsor the fifth annual charity golf tournament Sunday, June 29, beginning at 11 a.m.

The name of the event has been changed from the Vance K. “Kep” Vorhees charity golf tournament to Founding Fathers.

Lions Club schedules 18th Steak in the Park

The Phelps Lions Club will hold its 18th annual Steak in the Park event at Wavering Park in Phelps Wednesday, July 16.

A steak fry will be served at the park from 5 to 8 p.m. including a cooked-to-order filet mignon, potatoes, salad, roll and dessert for a cost of $17 in advance or $19 at the event.

Live entertainment will be provided by the Bill Hassey Orchestra.

Library to hold fundraiser event

The Phelps Public Library will hold a fundraiser event at the Wavering Park pavilion Saturday, June 28, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Local musicians will perform country, bluegrass and rock music.

Concessions will be available, and raffle tickets will be on hand for various donated items and gift certificates for a cost of $1 per ticket or six for $5.

All event proceeds will benefit the Phelps Public Library.

Sand Lake Pub owners Connie and Dan Swiecichowski sponsored the ninth annual flag burning ceremony on Flag Day Saturday.

“We are retiring these tattered flags in honor of our country and for those who have served, fought and died,” said Dan Swiecichow­ski.

The Northwoods Living Care Foundation will sponsor the 17th annual Picnic in the Park Tuesday, July 8, from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Wavering Park in Phelps.

“We have moved the date up a month from August thinking this will be a more convenient date for everyone,” said foundation President Cathy Grady.

Blood drive set June 26

A Community Blood Center blood drive will be held in Phelps Thursday, June 26, from 2 to 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, located at 4494 Town Hall Road.

“Volunteer blood donors are very special people,” said Jan Hadsell of the Community Blood Center.?“Donors play a crucial role in ensuring that hospital patients get the blood they need. Join this group of generous people, and schedule a donation appointment for June 26!”

Players win awards at basketball camp

Fourteen players attended the recent Great Northern Basketball Camp at Phelps High School under the direction of Matt Johnson of Hibbing Community College.

Johnson guided all players through the Great Northern Basketball Camp’s grades 5-8 division and grades 9-12 division, teaching programs and monitoring play in 1-on-1, 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 leagues and playoffs.

Players in each session voted for the Hustle Award and the Most Valuable Player and competed in the free-throw, touch shooting and decathlon contests.

Eighth-grade graduation
The class of 2018 recently graduated from eighth grade. Teacher Jennifer Leslie was the speaker followed by the iMovie and class recommendations for high school. Debi Hill to retire from Phelps District

Debi Hill will retire from the Phelps School District June 30. She started working for the district in 1991 as secretary/administrative assistant, serving under seven administrators.

Hill grew up in Eagle River and graduated from Eagle River High School, attended Bryant and Stratton Business College in Milwaukee and received a degree with honors.

She worked as a typesetter at the Vilas County News-Review for seven years.
