Fire department collecting discarded Christmas trees

The Land O’ Lakes Fire Department will collect discarded Christmas trees through Friday, Jan. 31.

The trees may be dropped off behind the Land O’ Lakes Fire Department building located at 4337 Highway B.

The trees will be used for blocking purposes during the Three Bear Sled Dog Race scheduled Feb. 8-9.

Postmaster retirement
Conover Postmaster Debra Martin announced that she will retire as postmaster Dec. 31. Martin has worked for the postal service for 28 years starting in Land O’ Lakes in 1985. She also spent time working in the post offices in Phelps, Land O’ Lakes, Eagle River and Woodruff before being promoted to postmaster of Fish Creek in 1992. Pantry donation
 Kim Eggleston (left) of Eggleston Custom Cabinets & Home Furnishings in Land O’ Lakes recently presented a check for $260 to Kathy Hamann of the Headwaters Food Pantry in Land O’ Lakes. Santa Weekend featured numerous holiday events

Santa Weekend in Land O’ Lakes was held the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving.

While waiting for Santa to arrive, the library was busy with a Christmas ornament workshop. Winter weather greeted Santa when he arrived at the Land O’ Lakes airport where a crowd was on hand to welcome him and go on the horse-drawn wagon ride to the downtown Christmas celebration across from the library.

Watercolor painting class slated Jan. 6, 13 and 20

Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans Inc. (LOLA) will offer a  beginning watercolor painting class lead by resident LOLA artist Wendy Powalisz Mondays, Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the LOLA Art Center.

Powalisz has dabbled in art since she was a child and started a serious study of watercolor 20 years ago.

“Her style is bold, graphic and colorful, and her original watercolors are inspired by the creatures found in nature at her homestead in Land O’ Lakes,”

Artist to give critiques at center for the arts
Artist Karen Lenhart will give critiques of community members’ artwork at the Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans (LOLA) Inc. Center for the Arts Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 1-3 p.m. The event is free with a suggested $10 donation to benefit LOLA programming efforts. 			      —Contributed Photo

Artist Karen Lenhart will be at the Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans Inc. (LOLA) Center for the Arts Wednesday, Dec. 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. to give critiques of artwork brought to the event.

Artists of all levels are welcome to bring in two pieces of their work, in any media, and Lenhart will give her expert advice on design, composition, color, technique and suggestions for matting and framing.

LOLA sets holiday open house

Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans Inc. (LOLA) will hold its traditional holiday open house Saturday, Dec. 14, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the LOLA Center for the Arts.

The open house will feature a book signing by Marilyn Annin for her “Up North Stories” book series, including a book set in Land O’ Lakes in the ice age, from 10 a.m to noon, and live music from local musicians.

All of the proceeds from the book series sales will be donated to the Land O’ Lakes Historical Society and LOLA.

Hope Lutheran Church sets Carols and Creches Fest

Hope Lutheran Church in Land O’?Lakes will celebrate the Advent Christmas season with its annual Carols and Creches Festival, Sunday, Dec. 8. A festival worship service will begin the service at 9:30 a.m., followed by brunch.

Members and friends of the congregation will have an array of nativity scenes on display for viewing.

A cookie walk will be held with the proceeds to benefit Mission Smiles Orphanages in Orissa, India. The orphanage compound suffered severe damage in the recent cyclone that hit the area.

Hope Lutheran Church is located at N. 1764 Highway 45.

Northwoods Singers, youth choir to hold concerts Dec. 12, 15

The Northwoods Singers and the Northwoods Youth Choir will present “A Night for All the World” in two holiday concerts.

The first concert will be Thursday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m. at Grace Covenant Church located at 316 Jasper St. in Iron River, Mich.

The second will be Sunday, Dec. 15, at 4 pm. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ located at 101 N. First St. in Eagle River.

Both concerts will be free, and will feature refreshments following the concert.  A free-will offering will be taken.

Various members of the group will provide  percussion.

Military donations
 For the second year, VFW Post 8400 in Land O’ Lakes hosted Girl Scout Brownie Troop 7056. The troop baked a variety of cookies to be sent overseas to servicemen and -women.
