Invasive water flea limited to Star Lake

Of 28 Vilas County lakes surveyed for spiny water fleas last summer, only Star Lake in the town of Plum Lake was found to have the aquatic invasive species and a plan has been devised to limit its expansion to other lakes.

“This was the only spiny water flea finding in all the approximately 265 lakes surveyed statewide,” said Vilas County invasive species coordinator Ted Ritter.

Preliminary hearing ordered for Rosner

A preliminary hearing was ordered on felony charges against Andrew Rosner, 28, of Eagle River and will be next Tuesday, Feb. 25 in Vilas County Circuit Court.

Rosner faces two counts of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the alleged stabbing Feb. 1 of Morgan Maney, 20, also of Eagle River. The criminal complaint indicated Rosner knew Maney was pregnant at the time of the incident, hence the second felony charge is against an unborn child by use of a dangerous weapon.

City works on agreement for housing development

A developer’s agreement affecting up to 19 acres of land on Eagle River’s northwest side was given a first review by the Eagle River City Council last week, with authorization to continue discussions that could bring up to 60 duplex and multiple- family housing units into the city.

The site is located between Mill Street and Illinois Road on property owned by Kay and Junior Ludwig, who would provide the land to S.C. Swiderski LLC of Mosinee, a for-profit entity with a diversified portfolio of properties.

The proposed agreement indicates the development would add a minimum of $1.5 million

Stephens wins awards for sales with Century 21

Century 21 Burkett & Associates recently ann­ounced that Tara Stephens won the Emerald Award for 2012 and the Diamond Award for 2013 from Century 21.

The Diamond Award recognizes a gross commission of $176,000 or 50 units of sale for the year.

Emergency management lists resources for propane crisis

As propane issues continue to impact area residents and businesses, Oneida County Emergency Management recently released a list of available resources.

The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program is a federally funded program that assists eligible households pay a portion of their home heating costs.

Assistance is based on 60% of the state median income level over a three-month period.

Sixty percent of the state median income for a household size of one is $6,173;

Belzer recognized for saving life

A commendation was presented to Vilas County Sheriff’s Department telecommunicator Tom Belzer by Lt. Dale Soltow last week for his life-saving instructions to grandparents that revived their granddaughter.

According to the commendation, Belzer received a 911 call last October for a young female having a seizure and not breathing. He instructed the caller on performing cardiopulmonary

Rhinelander woman dies in Woodboro car crash

WOODBORO — A 36-year-old Rhinelander woman was pronounced dead following a vehicle crash on Highway 8 and Shady Rest Road in Woodboro last Friday morning, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash — which took place between a passenger car and a van and was reported at 9:57 a.m. — was one among a rash of vehicle crashes throughout the area Friday.

Monica A. Bartishofski was pronounced deceased at the scene of the accident.

Conover, Phelps business owners to discuss DNR bike trail grant
