Buell sentenced to three years in state prison

A former custodian for the Phelps School District, who in June entered guilty pleas to two counts of possession of child pornography, was sentenced to three years in the Wisconsin Prison System in Vilas County Circuit Court last Thursday.

Richard Buell, 62, was originally charged last August with 10 counts of child pornography after it was learned a school computer he was using for custodial work had child pornography images. The other eight counts were dismissed in the plea agreement.

Father, son sentenced for possessing eagle

A father and son who farm in the Sugar Camp area were sentenced Monday by U.S. District Judge James D. Peterson for conduct relating to the possession of an American bald eagle.

Alvin Sowinski, 78,  re­ceived a $30,000 fine, a seven-year ban on his hunting, fishing and trapping privileges, $100,000 in restitution and one year of probation and four months of home confinement, announced John W. Vaudreuil, U. S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin.

His son, Paul Sowinski, 46, received a $10,000 fine, a five-year ban

Vilas Fair starts Thursday

The 98th annual Vilas County Fair will be held in Eagle River Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 7-10, supplying area families with an abundance of activities as it has since the inaugural event in 1916.

The fair will open Thursday night with the signaling of the Civil War cannon.

Paul Bunyan Fest scheduled Aug. 13

The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center is seeking vendors to display their  Woods-themed and other handmade crafts for sale at Paul Bunyan Fest set Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Eagle River.

The event will feature more than 75 arts and crafts booths, chain-saw carving demonstrations by Ken Schels and live musical entertainment.

Also available will be the Heap’n Help’n Paul Bunyan-size
