Subsidized school meal income guidelines released

Each year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Services updates income eligibility guidelines for meals served at schools and day-care programs, based on federal poverty levels.

The income guidelines began July 1 and will remain in effect until June 30, 2015.

The guidelines apply to student eligibility for free and reduced-price school meals offered through the National School Lunch or School Breakfast programs, milk offered through the special milk program, as well as to reimbursement for meals served in day-care centers

Car show, cookout set at historical museum

The Eagle River Historical Society and the Up North Model A Club will present a car show and cook out Thursday, Aug. 14, on the grounds of the Historical Museum at 1181 Highway 45 S. in Eagle River.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and there is no charge to attend.

Hamburgers, brats and beverages will be served free of charge, although donations are welcome, according to Craig Moore, Historical Society president.

Vilas Board amends plan for ATVs

County roads, forests
could get trail system

The Vilas County Board voted 15-4 last Tuesday night in favor of an amendment to the 15-year Vilas County Forest Comprehensive Land Use Plan to allow all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on some public roadways and designated trails in the county forest.

Board supervisors discussed the matter for more than two hours in front of nearly 400 concerned citizens at the Arbor Vitae Town Hall.

Three Lakes, Phelps set firemen’s picnics

The 56th annual Three Lakes Firemen’s Picnic will be at Cy Williams Park and the grounds of the Information Bureau on Maple Lake this Sunday, Aug. 3, from noon to 5 p.m.

The fundraiser for the department will feature youth games, prizes, music, food and refreshments, according to Fire Chief Dave Kirby.

Food will include brat­wurst and roasted corn. Beer and soda will be available and entertainment will be pro­­vided.

There will be a number of raffles
