St. Germain man gets probation after pleading no contest to theft
A 20-year-old St. Germain man, originally charged with three counts of uttering a forgery for writing checks stolen from a Beloit residence, pleaded no contest and was found guilty to an amended charge of misdemeanor theft in Vilas County Circuit Court last week.
James D. Mackay’s sentence was withheld and he was placed on probation for one year, concurrent to his probation in Oneida County.
Conditions of Mackay’s probation include: repay all restitution, which Circuit Judge Neal A. Nielsen III noted has already been completed; serve 50 hours of community service, which also has been completed; restorative justice if the victim agrees; written apology to the victims; no contact with the victims; and can transfer to Washington state.

Jury trial set for Arbor Vitae man charged in pot-growing operation
A jury trial for a 40-year-old Arbor Vitae man charged with maintaining a drug trafficking place and possession with intent to deliver marijuana has been scheduled for Oct. 2-3 in Vilas County Circuit Court.
Kevin A. Shumake was the leasee of a residence at 1399 South Farming Road in Arbor Vitae where law enforcement officers found a large marijuana growing operation during the execution of a search warrant Feb. 6.
According to the complaint, Shumake was allegedly involved in growing and selling marijuana from April 15, 2011, to Feb. 7, 2012. Officers found more than 60 live marijuana plants and 40 to 60 marijuana root bulbs in the residence.

Lac du Flambeau man charged with 1st-degree attempted homicide
A 30-year-old man who allegedly stabbed another man in the leg during a party May 19 in Lac du Flambeau was charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide in Vilas County Circuit Court last week. James L. Peterson of Lac du Flambeau was charged last Thursday after probable cause was found that he had committed a crime. Vilas Circuit Judge Neal A. Nielsen III scheduled Peterson’s arraignment for June 17 at 10 a.m. and his $15,000 cash bond was continued.
