Man charged with theft by contractor
to make initial appearance June 17

A 50-year-old Burlington man, charged with theft by a contractor, was not present for his initial appearance in Vilas County Circuit Court last week and it was rescheduled for June 17 at 10 a.m.

Michael R. Kempken, working under the name Mike Kempken & Sons Construction LLC, allegedly failed to pay a subcontractor for electrical work done on a new home in Vilas County.

According to the complaint, Kempken owed the subcontractor $5,980 and made $500 payments April 18, June 5 and June 21, 2012, but the Arbor Vitae electrician is still owed $4,480.

In other felony cases, James E. Hosking, 55, of Biloxi, Miss., had a motion hearing to amend his previous deferred entry of judgment of June 22, 2009. Charged with three counts of

Plea/sentencing hearing set June 10
for man who allegedly forged checks

A 19-year-old St. Germain man charged with three counts of uttering a forgery and one count of receiving stolen property will have a  plea and sentencing hearing June 10 at 2 p.m. in Vilas County Circuit Court.

James D. Mackay also is charged with possession of marijuana and misdemeanor bail jumping.  Mackay’s pretrial conference was held in the district attorney’s office May 21.

According to the complaint, Mackay allegedly wrote three checks that were stolen from a Beloit home. The owners of the checks said the checking account had been closed and their credit union reported that three checks were cashed at two Eagle River businesses for $56.89, $104 and $54.23.

Mackay apparently visited the home at some point

Conover man charged with felony
for damaging tents at 2011 festival

An 18-year-old Conover man, who allegedly caused damage to two tents at the Festival of Flavors in Eagle River in 2011, made his initial appearance in Vilas County Circuit Court last week.

Jacob S. Wolf was charged with felony criminal damage to property, party to a crime and was released on a $1,000 signature bond. His preliminary hearing was set for May 16 at 10 a.m.

According to the complaint, Wolf and two minors allegedly damaged two large, white, carnival-type tents at the Festival of Flavors at Riverview Park in Eagle River Aug. 29, 2011, by throwing knives at the tents.
