Two suspects in VFW burglary
to get preliminary hearing Oct. 25

Two 18-year-old men who were allegedly involved in a burglary at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) building in Land O’ Lakes in July made initial appearances in Vilas County Circuit Court last week.

Jamie L. Pagel, 18, of Conover, told Circuit Judge Neal A. Nielsen III that he wants an attorney and a preliminary hearing was set for Oct. 25 at 11:30 a.m. His $2,500 signature bond was continued with the conditions that he have no­ contact with the three other suspects in the burglary July 14.

Vilas County Sheriff

A total of 229 complaints were entered by Vilas County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers last week.

The department reported at least 14 vehicle accidents, two requests for an ambulance, three animal problems, five requests for agency assistance, seven burglar alarms, one burglary, one request for citizen assistance, one domestic violence complaint, one instance of found property, five cases of fraud, two hit-and-runs, one lost person, two reports of lost property, two weapons offenses, four re­ports of hazardous conditions, five juvenile problems/runaways, one fire, two reports of criminal damage to property, one abandoned vehicle, three disturbances, two reports of suspicious circumstances, two thefts, 11 traffic violations, two vacation checks, three welfare checks, 10 911 hang-ups, one ATV?problem and three drug problems.

At least seven calls were re­ferred to the Eagle River Police De­partment and there were at least 20 informational or procedural entries.

In the past week, at least one person was booked at the Vilas County Jail for operating after revocation.

During the week, the in­mate population ranged from 70 to 78. As of Oct. 21, there were 78 inmates.

Sayner woman pleads no contest
to nine counts of animal abuse

A 48-year-old Sayner woman facing 27 counts of animal abuse avoided a jury trial and pleaded no contest to nine counts, with all others dismissed, in Vilas County Circuit Court last week.

Lauri A. Schilling was charged last April with nine counts of intentionally failing to provide food for animals, nine counts of unsanitary conditions and nine counts of intentionally abandoning animals, all Class A misdemeanors. Her estranged husband, Ronnie R. Schilling, 47, also faced the same number and types of charges.
