Man gets five years’ probation, 
$3,000 fine for 7th-offense OWI

A 47-year-old Lac du Flambeau man, who was found guilty of a seventh-offense operating while intoxicated and operating a motor vehicle while revoked by a Vilas County jury Aug. 7 had a prison sentence stayed and he was placed on probation for five years in Vilas County Circuit Court last week.

Walter C. Pappas was sentenced to eight years in the Wisconsin Prison System, including four years confinement and four years of extended supervision, but the sentence was stayed. A?condition of his probation includes a $3,000 fine.

Vilas County Sheriff

A total of 255 complaints were entered by Vilas County Sheriff’s Department dispatchers last week.

The department reported at least 47 vehicle accidents, five requests for an ambulance, one animal problem, three requests for agency assistance, 11 burglar alarms, one burglary, 14 requests for citizen assistance, two reports of fraud, three harassment complaints, two reports of trespassing, one attempt to locate, one lost person,  nine re­ports of hazardous conditions, one juvenile prob­lem/runaway, five reports of suspicious circumstances, two thefts, six traffic violations,  eight welfare checks, seven 911 hang-ups and two drug problems.

Two charged for cashing checks
from life insurance account

A Waukesha man and Conover woman, who allegedly cashed checks from another person’s life insurance policy, were charged with theft of movable property in Vilas County Circuit Court last week.

Glenn A. Haase, 42,  who made a voluntary appearance, also is charged with theft in a business setting over $10,000. He was re­leased on a $10,000 signature bond with the condition he have no contact with the victim from St. Germain, whose husband had died.

Karen E. Carlson, 40, made her initial appearance  and was released on a $5,000 signature bond with the same condition. Haase and Carlson also were given the second condition they have no contact with each other, except that Carlson could give Haase a ride back to his vehicle last Monday.
