ObamaCare ignores basic concept of insurance

Letter to the Editor:

In response to the Jan. 8 Robert Reich column, “Health law deserves time.”

Robert Reich says that the Affordable Care Act deserves time before we can pass judgment on it. He admits that only 35% of those questioned in a CNN poll support the law.

Turns out it is not affordable because it ignores the basic concept of insurance. That rationale is to provide coverage for a large, unexpected loss. Homeowners insurance is a good example. You purchase this by using your own money to pay premiums.

Eagle Waste committed
to these communities

Eagle Waste & Recycling Inc. has completed a massive building and equipment expansion, bringing at least 17 new year around jobs and state-of-the-art recycling advances to Eagle River and the area.

It is rare in the tourism-focused economy of area communities to see that type of industrial-based job production in a single project, so that is the major victory in the latest development — full-time, year-around employment with benefits.

We’re grateful to owner Alan Albee because

Many businesses helped during ice castle construction

Letters to the Editor:

While members of the Eagle River Area Fire Department   and numerous  volunteers helped with the construction of this year’s Eagle River Ice Castle at the lake, transporting ice or at the building site, many businesses also helped in some way or another during the process.

Those businesses should be recognized and include Amerigas, Ferrellgas, Custom Components,

Hats off to local brewers

Letter to the Editor:

Congratulations to Bill Summers and Marc O’Brien of the Tribute Brewing Company on the celebration of their first year as a brewer in Eagle River and the state of Wisconsin.

As a member of a brewing family now in its sixth generation of brewing beer in Wisconsin, I can only think back to those first 400 barrels brewed by my great-great- grandfather Jacob in Chippewa Falls.

Bill and Marc are brewing some pretty darned good beers and have garnered local support of their taphouse and beers as something fun and special.  It is another reason to love the North Woods.

Nothing is the same anymore

Letter to the Editor:

Why did the Veterans Administration (VA) stop 50-plus school children from giving out Christmas cards at the VA hospital?

The people who escorted these children to the hospital to distribute the Christmas cards were told this was their policy and therefore couldn’t pass out the Christmas cards! America, these are men and women who have been injured fighting to keep us safe and free.

Trail not needed along highway

Letter to the Editor:

I stand with Tom and Karen Martens on their position against the snowmobile trail on their property. Wisconsin has 25,000 miles of trails. I don’t think they need another 100 yards.

What happened to peace and quiet?

With all the snowmobile trails, where do they ride? On the shoulders of the highway instead of the trails.

Suing over ObamaCare exemptions

Letter to the the Editor:

Monday, Jan. 6, I filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Wisconsin to make Congress live by the letter of the health-care law it imposed on the rest of America.

By arranging for me and other members of Congress and their staffs to receive benefits intentionally ruled out by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the administration has exceeded its legal authority.

The president and his congressional supporters have also broken their promise to the American people that ObamaCare was going to be so good that they would participate in it just like everyone else. In truth, many members of Congress feel entitled to an exemption from the harsh realities of the law

Need more than 350 wolves

Letter to the Editor:

Wisconsin’s wolves and climate have at least one thing in common: 350.

Why 350 wolves? Halfway between 200 and 500? Not at all. A Wisconsin biologist explained it simply, “Three hundred and fifty was the point at which wolves could be removed from ‘life support’ during recovery.”

The last three years that number of 350 wolves has been falsely represented by one individual, backed by interests invested in killing the wolf, and brought forth to 20 counties across northern Wisconsin in the form of a resolution supporting a maximum of 350 wolves.

Upon research, this boilerplate resolution was most often
