ATV rhetoric is out of control

Letter to the Editor:

I am making reference to the Letter to the Editor by Ed Starke, concerned citizen.

Ed is actually Ed Starke, town board supervisor, and made the motion to pass the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) route plan. His concern was a proposal by seasonal residents to boycott Three Lakes businesses that back the ATV club (yellow shirts).

I myself am a year-round resident and patronize the Three Lakes merchants whenever possible. Many of these merchants are pinning their hopes for economic recovery

Wants to see change on St. Germain board

Letter to the Editor:

The residents of the town of St. Germain have an opportunity coming up in this next election to make a real and positive change for the good of our town.

Most of you know, I am a former town chairwoman and have lived here all of my life. I want what is best for our town and I feel that the direction of the town under Chairman Walt Camp is the wrong direction.

His leadership has created a one-man show, not a well-

Let’s get on board and support mine

Dear Editor:

I’m amazed at the content of the letters I see from the anti-Iron and Ashland county iron ore mine people.

Here is some of the stuff I’ve read:

“The sulfur and other dangerous minerals emitted will pollute the environment.” Sulfur is normally an insignificant product of iron mining. If it, or any other mineral is present, it must be controlled under the permit process.

“The mine will pollute the water downstream of the mine.” I grew up on the Gogebic Range when the mines were operating and around 100 of them had operated mostly unregulated for many decades. The water was as good then as it is now. The rivers and streams

Lake association offers freedom of choice

Letter the Editor:

The Big Sand Lake Property Owners Association was formed in 1993 to deal with the Eurasian water milfoil problem. I have been a voluntary member and contributor to fight that problem from the beginning.

I am proud to say the association has done a wonderful job with members voluntary donations, and grants from the state of Wisconsin to bring the milfoil to a much less expensive and manageable condition.

Not all property owners belong to or donated funds to the association. Some feel it is wrong to treat the lake with chemicals. (Do you

Our view

Every citizen has access
under public records law

This is Sunshine Week in America, a week-long celebration of laws that promote open government and enhance the public’s right to know — the foundation of a participatory democracy and a crucial part of our republic form of government.

In Wisconsin, vibrant “sunshine laws” such as the Public Records Law and the Open Meetings Law provide broad access to information about how our state and local governments operate.

Public oversight of government activity

Give ATV ordinance a try in Three Lakes

Letter to the Editor:

I am writing in response to the letter from Nick Kaufman in the March 6 edition of the Three Lakes News and anyone else considering boycotting the businesses in Three Lakes to protest the recent all-terrain vehicle (ATV) ordinance which was passed two weeks ago.

I would like to give a different perspective of what a boycott could do to this town.

At this time, Three Lakes has the best

Where’s the evidence of ore?

Dear Editor:

In light of your coverage and apparent support for Sen. Tom Tiffany and the mining bill, I have one very simple, concise comment /question.

Just where is the evidence of an ore body at the Penokee Range?

For well over a year, I have asked this question of Mr. Tiffany and many other supporters of this bill. I have received no satisfactory answer.

Even more troubling to

Facts suggest we’ve been duped on mine

Letter to the Editor:

U.S. Steel was willing and ready to sell the conservation rights on 16,000 acres of land along the Penokee Range through negotiation with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in 2003, including their mineral rights.

This is the same land Gogebic Taconite (GTAC) wants to mine. The same land for which GTAC has secured an option to obtain the mineral rights from current owners RGGS Land and Minerals of Texas and La Point Mining Company of Minnesota. The same land that drove the “Mining for Jobs” bill, SB1 and AB1.

In 2003, TNC applied for Forest Legacy Program funds to help

State mining bill all about greed PDF Print E-mail

Letter to the Editor:

Tom Tiffany’s mining bill is trading our children’s future for false promises today.

The huge black vulture called greed will rip open the heart and soul of the North Country.

This is mudji mush keeki (bad medicine)!

Is time closing in on guns, NRA? PDF Print E-mail

Dear Editor:

The other night I?watched the classic Western “The Wild Bunch.” During one scene, Pike Bishop (William Holden), the leader of the bunch, cautioned his fellow has-beens, “We gotta start thinkin’ beyond our guns, time is closin’ in on us.”

Oh, how sweet it would sound to many of us if Wayne LaPierre ever had to say such words to his National Rifle Association (NRA) comrades!
