Musky Classic planned Sept. 5-7 in Vilas County

Registration is now open for the 38th annual World Championship Musky Classic (WCMC) fishing tournament slated Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5-7.

This fishing tournament is supported and sponsored by the Presque Isle, Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters and Winchester communities.

Each community has a designated number of lakes that are available for the tournament, which is open to all anglers of all ages. Clubs and teams also are welcome.

The money raised from the Musky Classic goes towards scholarships

The Northland Pines boys soccer team split a pair of Great Northern Conference  (GNC) last week, beating Antigo 10-0 and then losing to Rhinelander 1-0.

The Eagles are now 2-1 in the GNC and will host Medford in a key game this Thursday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m.

Pines visited Rhinelander last Thursday in an early showdown among GNC powers the past five years.

Pines controls Calumet game, but loses in 4th

Eagles will travel
to Lakeland Friday

It was a game controlled for the most part by Northland Pines, but when the final whistle blew, Calumet came out on top 14-12 in the WestPAC football game at Cal­u­met, Mich., last Tuesday night.

“What a hard-fought game and a tough one to lose,” said Pines coach Eric Swanson. “We had many chances to take control of the game in the first half, but Calumet was up to the test and kept us out of the end zone.”

Pines finally broke the ice midway through the fourth quarter on a 2-yard touchdown run by Lance Bontrager, but the PAT-kick by Jake Jantzen was not good and Pines held a slim 6-0 lead.

On the next possession, Calumet scored just one minute later

The Phelps Lady Knights volleyball team will return four players to the court for the 2014 season, including senior Destiny Schreiber, junior Amanda Volkmann and sophomore Amanda Grmick.

Schreiber, a senior leader, is an excellent passer who is improving her outside hitting, according to coach Jenny Mueller.

“She has a good serve and can serve consistently for us,” said the coach.

Volkmann is stepping into a setting position this year and also plays as middle hitter.

Pines cross-country team competes at Hodag Invite

The Northland Pines cross-country team participated in the Hodag Invitational at Rhinelander High School last Thursday.

“It was our first meet of the season,”?said coach Don Czarapata. “Ten teams ran in the meet, including some large, very good Division 1 schools including D.C. Everest, Wausau East and Wausau West.

The Northland Pines boys and girls teams had some outstanding individual performances as well as exceptional team placing.

Bluejays cross-country team starts season at Rhinelander

The Three Lakes cross-country team kicked off its 2014 season last Thursday at the Hodag Invitational, hosted by Rhinelander High School.

Ten teams participated in the meet including Wausau West, Wausau East, D.C. Everest, Merrill, Antigo, Northland Pines, Rhine­lander, Laona-Wabeno, Crandon and Three Lakes.

Just two weeks into the season, this meet was a challenge for Three Lakes runners, going up against several good Division 1 and Division 2 teams.

The Three Lakes Lady Jays volleyball team traveled to Crivitz last Tuesday for an all-day tournament. The team also hosted Prentice and Mercer for a triangular Thursday.

The girls played two sets against each team that was at the tournament Tuesday. Maddie Sowinski rolled her ankle in warm-ups, putting her on the sidelines for the day. This caused some last-minute adjustments for the team.

Bluejays football team falls to Abundant Life

Abundant Life defeated the Three Lakes Bluejays in eight-man football 70-54 Saturday.

“We played a very physical game, but did not have an answer for their team speed,”?said Jays coach Tyler Maney.

Three Lakes had 382 yards rushing and 61 passing.

Jake Fath had 159 yards on 21 carries

Pines netters to face Hatchets

The Northland Pines volleyball team lost to Wausau East 2-1 in a quadrangular at Wausau East High School last Thursday.

Pines beat East 25-19 in the first game, but lost game two 23-25 and then dropped  game three 20-25.

The Eagles also faced Newman Catholic and Eau Claire North, but results were not available.

Northland Pines will open Great Northern Conference play against Tomahawk this Thursday, Sept. 4, at 7 p.m. at the Pines field house.
