Eagle girls win 2 in GNC; host Tomahawk Thursday

The Northland Pines girls softball team played a pair of doubleheaders in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) last week, winning two games at Lakeland but then dropping two contests at Medford 24 hours later.

The Eagles beat Lakeland 22-12 and 13-3 last Thursday, only the third and fourth games of the season for Pines who already had three doubleheaders postponed due to poor weather.

“We got an all-around great effort in the first and second games,” said Pines coach Mike Cox.

Pines girls finish meet in middle of the pack

The Northland Pines High School girls track team finished in the top half of a nine-team meet last Tuesday at home.

Tomahawk won the meet with 177 points, followed by Houghton, Mich., with 143, Calumet with 101, Pines with 64, Mercer with 54, Hurley with 49, Wakefield-Marinesco, Mich., with 26, Watersmeet, Mich., with 16 and Three Lakes with 16.

Eagles split GNC games, host Medford Thursday

The Northland Pines girls soccer team split a pair of Great Northern Conference (GNC) games last week, including a 10-0 win at Antigo and a 2-1 loss at Rhine­lander.

Last Tuesday against Antigo, Pines got on the board less than two minutes into the game as Lauren Lenz received a pass from Carly Ridderbusch and slotted the ball past the Antigo keeper.

Lexi Smith then scored on a high shot just out of the keeper’s reach. Ridderbusch got her first goal of the game from an outside shot again going high out of the keeper's reach.

Eighth-grade boys
The Phelps School eighth-grade boys basketball team recently ended its season 6-6. Bluejays track team travels for two meets

After three consecutive meet cancellations, the Three Lakes Bluejays track team traveled to Eagle River last Tuesday and to Stratford Thursday to compete.

Both meets brought competition from a combined 22 teams.
