Eagle girls beat Lakeland, Prentice

The Northland Pines girls basketball team improved its record to 11-3 with two wins this past week, including a big Great Northern Conference (GNC) 48-46 victory at Lakeland Friday night.

The Eagles also beat Prentice 58-23 in a nonconference game at home last Tuesday.

Falcons defeated in two games by Portage Lakes

The Eagle River Falcons traveled to Portage Lakes for a pair of Great Lakes Hockey League games Friday and Saturday, falling 8-3 the first game and getting edged 4-3 the next day.

The Falcons again were playing with a short-handed road roster, and the Pioneers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Friday night, netting the game’s first goal a minute and one-half into the game.

The goal was followed up with two more within the next 10 minutes to post a 3-0 lead with 8:22 to go in the first period.

Pickleball tourney set in Three Lakes

The Three Lakes Drama Club will hold a pickleball tournament and fundraiser Sunday,?Feb. 16, at Three Lakes High School.

Check-in will take place at 11:30 a.m. followed by pickleball at noon.

The drama club requests registration by Feb. 12 to guarantee a spot, as there is a 26-team maximum. Walk-ins will be welcome, but limited to available space.

Registration for the double-elimination tourney will cost $10

Phelps girls basketball team splits pair of NLC?games

The Phelps Lady Knights basketball team split a pair of games in the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) last week after beating White Lake 61-15 at home Tuesday night and falling 40-27 to Goodman-Pembine Friday.

The Lady Knights got off to an early start against the Lakers and took an early first-quarter lead of 17-4.  Phelps then went on a huge  25-4 run in the second quarter to open up a halftime lead of 42-8.

“We played excellent de­fense and had very few turnovers in the half,” said Phelps coach Jason Pertile.
