Broomball tournament slated Feb. 8

The Rhinelander Area Chamber of Commerce will host the third annual Hodag Broomball Tournament Saturday, Feb. 8, at Hodag Park.

This one-day tournament will again be a part of the Lions Fisheree and Winter Festival Feb. 8-9 at the park.

For two years running, Team Bucketheads has taken home the Golden Broom Trophy.

Snowshoe Hare race set Saturday

Holiday Acres in Rhinelander will host the Snowshoe Hare snowshoe race Saturday, Jan. 11, with registration beginning at 9 a.m.

The race, which is part of the Braveheart Series, is slated to begin at 10:30 a.m., and a free youth race will start at 11:30 a.m.

Registration costs will be $25 for forms received by Jan. 3 and $30 after that date.

Eagles defeat Medford; face Hodags this Friday
Members of the Northland Pines girls basketball team celebrated the team’s 38-36 victory over Medford at Medford last Friday night. The Eagles improved to 2-0 in conference play.

Playing in a tough atmosphere, the Northland Pines girls basketball team improved to 2-0 in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) with a 38-36 win at Medford Friday night.

“Traveling to Medford seems to be anything but dull when it comes to girls basketball,” said Pines coach Larry Bergum. “Medford is an extremely tough atmosphere to play in.

Lady Knights earn convincing 46-18 win over Wisconsin Valley

The Phelps High School girls basketball team put another mark in the win column after defeating Wisconsin Valley Lutheran 46-18 last Friday.

The win put the Lady Knights at 7-3 overall and 3-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference (NLC).

“On average, we’ve played two to three more games than most of our NLC opponents coming into January,” said Phelps coach Jason Pertile. “We’re hoping that this experience will help us have a good January run to keep us in the conference contention.”

Falcons split games with Pioneers

The Eagle River Falcons hosted the Portage Lakes Pioneers in the friendly confines of the Dome last weekend. For the Falcons, the home crowd was a welcoming sight after four away games the last two weeks.

Friday night saw the home team’s offense out-shoot the Pioneers 55-24 and escape with a 7-6 win. Portage Lakes gained a split with a 5-4 win Saturday in a game that came right down to the wire.
