Eagles top Comets in league opener; host Hodags next

The Northland Pines boys hockey team opened the Great Northern Conference (GNC) with a thrilling 4-3 overtime victory at Waupaca Saturday.

“Waupaca lost a couple of key players from last season, but had their leading scorer back and their first-team All-Conference goalie as well,” said Pines coach Charlie DePuydt. “We knew that we were going to have to play well and slow Jared Erickson down through the neutral zone. He has great lateral movement and a very accurate hard shot.”

The Northland Pines girls basketball team chalked up two nonconference wins over Three Lakes 72-61 and Che­qua­megon 65-23 last week.

The Eagles improved to 3-0 overall and were scheduled to host Watersmeet, Mich., on Tuesday of this week in a nonconference game on Military Night at the field house.

The Northland Pines boys were scheduled to play at 6 p.m. with a military salute following the game. The girls were then scheduled to play at 8 p.m.

Bluejays defeat Lakers, fall to Goodman in OT

The Three Lakes boys basketball team split a pair of Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) games last week, winning on the road against White Lake 46-29 Friday before losing an overtime thriller 57-54 to Goodman-Pembine.

The Jays traveled to White lake to take on the Lakers in the opening NLC game for both teams.

“Sometimes you get a win when you do not play well, and that was the case in this game,” said Jays coach Jack Wales.

Phelps Knights defeat White Lake in hoops

The Phelps Knights basketball team split a pair of games last week, falling to Laona-Wabeno 45-36 last Tuesday before defeating White Lake 49-34 Friday.

Although there were a number of turnovers committed by Phelps during the White Lake game, the team did well enough otherwise to take the victory.

White Lake held a 9-4 lead after the first quarter, but a big second quarter for Phelps saw them head to the locker room with a healthy 21-13 halftime lead.

Lady Jays defeat White Lake 63-17

After a convincing 63-17 Northern Lakes Conference (NLC) win over White Lake last Thursday in their season opener, the Three Lakes Lady Jays basketball team lost a close game to Northland Pines 72-61 Friday.

Three Lakes led the Lakers 20-0 by the end of the first quarter, and had built a 35-8 lead by halftime.

“The girls played with lots of intensity and energy,” said Lady Jays coach Michele Brown.
