Four Eagle skaters earn all-conference

Freshman forward Amanda Sergent of the Northland Pines girls hockey team was named to the first team all-conference in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) for the 2013-’14 season.

Meanwhile, senior Jessica Roach and juniors Cali Sanborn and Kali Ebert made the second team. Pines coach Patrick Schmidt was named Coach of the Year.

Pines’ Skarbek receives honorable mention in GNC

The Great Northern Conference (GNC) has an­nounced its boys basketball all-conference team, including one player from North­land Pines.

Eagles junior guard A.J. Skarbek received honorable mention to the all-conference  team. Skarbek was second in the conference in rebounding, averaging seven boards a game. He also was tied for first in steals, averaging 2.3 a game. He average seven points a game for the Eagles.

The Phelps Lady Knights basketball team ended its season last week with a 37-31 win over Niagara last Tuesday and a 57-34 loss to Goodman-Pembine Friday in the WIAA Regional tournament.

The game against Niagara was close after the first period, as the Lady Knights took a narrow 14-13 lead after the first quarter.

Snowshoe Challenge draws over 40 entrants

More than 40 adults and youths participated in four events at the 2014 Snowshoe Challenge at Trig’s Klondike Days in Eagle River March 1.

A total of nine men participated in the men’s 5-kilometer race on the wooded snowshoe course behind Rocking W Stables.

Derek Tassler, 39, of Tomahawk, won the race in 21 minutes, 32 seconds. The second-place male was Kyle Rogers, 30, of Rhine­lander, who finished the race in 24:04, and the third-place male was Andrew Niemi, 14, of Ironwood, Mich., with a time of 24:16.
