Phelps golf tourney
 The North South Twin Lake Riparian Lake Association recently held its second annual Phelps Big Sand Lake Golf Outing. Thirty-two golfers participated in the two-person scramble. Event winners included, from left, Jerry Maara, Chris Darton, Diane Micke and Doug Peterson. The men won with a score of 34 and the women with 40. No Frills Marathon serves as cheapest Boston qualifier

Event slated
for Aug. 31

Marshfield Clinic and Ministry Health Care will sponsor the third annual No Frills Minocqua Marathon Sunday, Aug. 31, at 7 a.m. on the Bearskin Trail in Minocqua.

The event is planned to accommodate those who aspire to run their first marathon, as well as veteran runners trying to better their times or qualify for the Boston Marathon, according to Blain Nyberg, Marshfield Clinic Pharmacy manager and event organizer.

“Last year, we had 187 runners register for the race,”

Belcher gets ace at golf league

Paul Belcher of Eagle River shot a hole-in-one the night of Wednesday, Aug. 6, during his weekly men’s league at Eagle River Golf Course.

He shot the ace on the seventh hole using a six iron to help him to a score of 39 for the nine-hole round. The seventh hole was playing at 160 yards.

Witnessing the event were golf partner Ken Biegel and match opponent Josh Joslin.

Belcher said he previously shot a hole-in-one on May 24, 1969, when he was 11 years old on hole 17 at Hillcrest Golf Course in Washington, Ill.

Third Bad-Dash race set in Manitowish Waters

The third annual Northwoods Bad-Dash, sponsored by Leinenkugels, the Manitowish Waters Chamber of Commerce and the North Lakeland Discovery Center, will be held Saturday, Aug. 30.

Registration will be held at 8 a.m. at the Manitowish Waters Community Center and the race will begin at 9 a.m. at the North Lakeland Discovery Center.

“This is a fun, untimed race where participants will take on 12 obstacles including a mud crawl, fish crib climb, the Lambeau Leap and much more,” said an event spokesperson.

The Northland Pines girls basketball team won the recent Phelps Girls Tournament. The Eagles were 4-0, beating  Laona-Wabeno, Ontanagon and Hurley in the preliminary rounds. The Eagles then beat Gilman in the championship. The Eagle girls who participated were Kate Mendham, Sydney Kamentz, Courtney Heller, Maria Wait, Tara Vanden Boom, Lexi Smith, Alex Gutierrez and Hadley Kruse.                                                               —Contributed Photo
