Wine-tasting benefit arranged in Conover

Lanny’s Fireside in Conover will host the eighth annual Wine Tasting Benefit Sunday, April 27, from 2 to 4:30 p.m.

The event will feature hors d’ouevres and a silent auction.

Proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of Vilas County, which operates a 501(c)(3) animal shelter in Vilas County.

Advance tickets are $25 and are available until Sunday,

Churches list Easter services

Easter church services are planned for Holy Week and Easter Sunday at churches throughout the North Woods. Holy Week dates include Maundy Thursday, April 17; Good Friday, April 18; Holy Saturday, April 19; and Easter Sunday, April 20.

Wildlife biologist gives presentation at Pines

Peter David with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission (GLIFWC) of Odanah gave a presentation on wild rice April 8 at Northland Pines Middle School in Eagle River as part of the district’s Farm to School Program.

Students in kindergarten through eighth grade at Northland Pines School District attended the presentations which featured a presentation on the growth, traditions and harvest of wild rice in our northern waters.

The students then had the opportunity to ask questions and sample Wisconsin harvested wild rice.

Hudson Shad performance set April 11 in Eagle River

The Headwaters Council for the Performing Arts (HCPA) announced that the male vocal quintet, Hudson Shad, has been engaged to replace the previously scheduled Voca People Friday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the Northland Pines High School auditorium.

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and seating will begin at 7 p.m. All Voca People tickets will be honored for this concert.

Mary Bonack named Miss Fox River Valley

Mary Ei­leen Bonack, 24, of Three?Lakes was named the 15th Miss Fox River Valley March 29,  during a double-pageant competition at Thomp­son Community Center in Appleton.

As a result, she has earned a spot in the 2014 Miss Wisconsin Scholarship Pageant to be held June 21 in Oshkosh.

The state winner advances to the 2014 Miss America Pageant Sept. 14 in Atlantic City, N.J.

Trees center to offer bat monitoring training

Trees For Tomorrow in Eagle River will offer a free training program for people interested in helping the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) monitor the state’s bats population Monday, April 21, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Education Hall on the Trees For Tomorrow campus.

The training is part of the school’s efforts to assist the DNR in assessing bat species population and distribution.

“Bat monitors help gather the data that the DNR uses to manage the bat population, an especially important task in light of the growing threat of white-nose syndrome,” said a Trees representative.

Elvis and Cline tribute show set

An Elvis and Patsy Cline tribute artists dinner and show to benefit the Northwoods Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH) Frederick Place in Rhinelander, will take place Saturday, May 17, at Whitetail Inn, located at 9038 Highway 70 W. in St. Germain.

Social will be at 5 p.m., dinner at 6 p.m. and the show will start at 7:30 p.m.

Byrnes retires from housing authority

Francine Byrnes, who managed the St. Germain Housing Authority for 21 years, retired March 31. Byrnes’ duties as executive director have passed to A&M Services Property Management LLC in Crandon.

Peace Café on green cleaning products scheduled April 15 in Eagle River

Many Ways of Peace (MWP) in downtown Eagle River will hold its monthly Peace Café Tuesday, April 15, from noon to 1 p.m. This month’s topic is “Making Your Own Green Cleaning and Personal Care Products” presented by Marcy Chuckel of Eagle River.

Soup featuring local and organic ingredients, and tea and fair-trade coffee will be served at noon, followed by the program. The cost will be $6 per person. Reservations are recommended.
