Starke attends Aviation Challenge

Will Starke of Three Lakes recently attended Aviation Challenge at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Ala., home of Space Camp and NASA’s official Visitor Information Center for Marshall Space Flight Center.

Pines Community Wellness Center to host Strong Women Program

The Pines Community Wellness Center will offer the Strong Women program — a 10-week exercise program for middle-aged and older women — Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon in the exercise room located in the Wellness Center of Northland Pines High School. The series will begin Tuesday, Sept. 16, and run through Nov. 20.

Each class will include progressive weight training, flexibility and balance activities. The cost of the program will be $40 for the 10-week session.

Bailey Ramesh of Land O’ Lakes named to National scholars society

The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) announced that Northland Pines High School student Bailey Ramesh of Land O’ Lakes has been selected to become a member of the organization.

The society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment.

The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.

Ace to host bucket promotion for Children’s Miracle Network

Saturday, Aug. 16, Ace Hardware customers who make a $5 donation to Ministry Saint Joseph’s Children’s Hospital, a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, will earn a limited edition five-gallon bucket and receive 20% off selected items that fit in the bucket.

All donations will directly benefit children at the hospital, as well as hospital programs, services and life-saving medical equipment, and children’s illness and injury prevention projects.

Pancake breakfast slated at The Rock

St. Mary of the Snows Anglican Church will host a free pancake breakfast Saturday, Aug, 16, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Rock Community Mission Center, located at 1019 E. Wall St. in Eagle River.

Donation baskets will be available for those who would like to support the work at The Rock. The Mission Center is home to St. Mary of the Snows Anglican Church.

The Rock also houses the Northwoods Share Needs Ministry, The Salvation Army, and is the site of Northwoods Share Community dinners.

The Rock currently serves as the drop-off site

Celebration of Life set Aug. 21 in Rhinelander

James Beck Cancer Center will host the seventh annual Celebration of Life – Life is a Gift, Untie the Ribbons event Thursday, Aug. 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at  James Beck Cancer Center on the grounds of Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital, located at 2251 North Shore Drive in Rhinelander.

Celebration of Life honors  those whose lives have been touched by cancer, cancer survivors, and recognizes the contributions of their families and friends.

Red Hot Chilli Pipers to perform Aug. 20

The Red Hot Chilli Pipers will perform Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Campanile Center for the Arts in Minocqua.

The pipers, formed in 2002,  are a nine-piece ensemble consisting of pipers, guitarists, keyboards and drummers who played locations such as New York, Beijing, China, and Melbourne, Australia.

The group has also performed on the NBC telecast of the London Olympics, and won top prize on the prime-time TV talent show, “When Will I Be Famous” in the U.K. in 2007.

Stecker of St. Germain releases new book

Tom Stecker of St. Germain, recently released his new book, “The Pincherry Journals, Tales and Tallies of a Wisconsin Hunting Family.”

The book is a sequel to his first work, “The Pincherry Group, The Story of How a Wisconsin Hunting Camp Forged a Family Legacy,” which was released in 2012.

In 1938, Stecker’s grandfather, Edmund “Pappy” Stecker took possession of a tarpaper shack in what was then the wilderness of Oneida County.
