Sobiskova moves to U.S. to pursue art

Jaroslava Sobiskova — Jarka for short, a Slavic name meaning fierce and strong, and pronounced Yarka — is a complex name for a complex, multi-faceted and superbly talented woman.

This writer, experiencing trouble pronouncing her name, jokingly suggested calling her “Mazda,” to which she replied, “Zoom, zoom!” She is clever, funny and refuses to take herself too seriously.

Northwoodstock arranged Aug. 9

The 2014 Northwoodstock Music Festival is slated Saturday, Aug. 9, at Bent’s Camp, located at 6882 Helen Creek Road, Land O’ Lakes, gates open at noon.

The event will feature the music of Chasin Mason, Heartsfield, Taylor Davis, Harrison Marsh Band and Kevin Brandt, and an outdoor bar and food.

Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the gate.

Jump Start Band Clinic offered at middle school

Northland Pines Middle School in Eagle River will offer a Jump Start Band Clinic Monday, Aug. 11, through Friday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon in the middle school band room.

Jump Start is a week-long, summer program designed to give beginning band students a jump-start on learning how to play the instrument they will be playing in the band in the fall.

Middle school to host walkabouts Aug. 20-21

Northland Pines Middle School in Eagle River will be open for walkabouts Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Students will be able to  get a copy of their schedule, locate their locker, practice their combination and find their classrooms.

Antique show
The Eagle River Rotary Club held its 54th annual antique show and sale at the Eagle River Derby Track Friday and Saturday. Attendees talked antiques (above), admired jewelry, and had the chance to have damaged crystal, china, porcelain and pottery mended by Mary Lou’s Crystal Repair. Pawzitive Outdoor Games to feature dog competitions

In recognition of its one-year anniversary, Pawz n’ Clawz Natural Pet Food and Grooming will hold a fundraiser event called Pawzitive Outdoor Games Saturday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rhine­lander Airport.

Canine contests at the event will include dock diving sponsored by Invisible Fence and Lakeside Dock & Lift Sales, an agility competition sponsored by Northern Paws Animal Hospital and the Fastest Dog in the Northwoods contest sponsored by Rhinelander Honda.

Pantry donation
Northwoods Share Needs Pantry Ministry, located at the The Rock in Eagle River, collected more than $500 worth of paper products, soap and personal care items from the Vacation Bible Schools of the St. Germain Evangelical Free Church and Conover Evangelical Free Church. Blood drive set Aug. 13

The Northwoods Community Blood Center will hold a blood drive Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Eagle River, located at 418 W. Pine St.

Polish Regatta slated Aug. 9

The 14th annual Polish Regatta will be held rain or shine at Pitlik’s Sand Beach Resort on Sand Lake in Eagle River Saturday, Aug. 9, at noon. This year’s theme is “Villains and Superheroes.”

Teams dressed in costumes will compete to determine their poll position on the starting lineup for the human-powered boat race, the main attraction at the event.

“This event is by far one of the most humorous you’ll ever attend, and it’s all about getting people together for a day of laughter, something we probably don’t do enough,” said an event organizer.

Historical society donation
The Living History Encounter hasn’t been able to secure funding to continue its programs, and decided to donate its remaining funds ($459) to the Eagle River Historical Society.
