Howard Young Medical Center (HYMC) in Woodruff has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for its hip and knee replacement programs by demonstrating compliance with the commission’s national standards for health-care quality and safety in disease-specific care.

The certification award recognizes HYMC’s dedication to continuous compliance with The Joint Commission’s state-of-the-art standards.

Northwoods Art Tour set July 25-27

The selected artists of the Northwoods Art Tour will open their private studios and galleries to visitors Friday through Sunday, July 25- 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily for the 15th annual Northwoods Art Tour (NAT).

The free, self-guided tour will feature 32 studios in Vilas, Oneida, Iron, Lincoln and Langlade counties.

The tour will feature six new members this year and returning members have created new work.

Museum opening
Members and guests sipped refreshments and viewed stories, photos and artifacts of area hunting guides at the opening party of the Land O’ Lakes NorthernWaters Museum June 25. The hunting guides exhibit is the 2014 addition to the Historic Guides Exhibit curated by Dr. Barbara Wilkinson. The NorthernWaters Museum is free and open to the public. Hours are Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Labor Day. Fall hours will be announced at a later date. Quilt show slated July 19

Cranberry Country Quilters will host Return to a Walk in the Woods Quilt Show Saturday, July 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Trees For Tomorrow campus, located at 519 Sheridan St. in Eagle River.

The quilts will be hung outdoors around the circle drive, weather permitting. Otherwise the quilts will move indoors into the dorms.

Parking for those with physical disabilities will be available on site. There will also  be street parking.

Boulder Junction sidewalk sales scheduled Tuesday, July 22

Boulder Junction area businesses will hold sidewalk sales Tuesday, July 22.

“Come spend a day shopping on the streets of Boulder Junction,” said a Boulder Junction Chamber of Commerce spokesperson.

The Boulder Junction Lion’s Club Tuesday Flea Market will take place outside on the community center grounds beginning at 8 a.m.

Artarama to host youth art exhibit

Artarama, set Saturday, July 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverview Park in Eagle River, will include Young at Art — an exhibit featuring handmade products for sale by North Woods youth artists.

Art displayed in the Young at Art tent is made artists 18 years old and younger.

According to Lori Hahn, Artarama chair, the youth art is always as interesting and diversified as their adult counterparts at the show.

Community picnic set in Eagle River July 15

Northwoods Share will host its fourth annual free Summer Picnic in the Park Community Gathering at Riverview Park in Eagle River Tuesday, July 15, from 4 to 7 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by Century 21 Burkett & Associates and Abundant Life Outreach Ministries.

A bounce house will be set up for children. Century 21 Burkett & Associates will provide and serve a picnic-style meal at 5:30 p.m.

Special Olympics Wisconsin selected Courtney Heller of Eagle River as a Youth Activation Committee member to represent Team Wisconsin at the Youth Summit that was held in conjunction with the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in Princeton, N.J., June 14-21.

Heller, a Northland Pines  High School junior, flew out of Madison with the 62 athletes participating in USA Games, which only occurs every four years, like the Olympics.

Their send-off included a performance by UW-Madison Marching Band and an appearance by Bucky Badger, who did pushups for every athlete competing at USA Games.

While in New Jersey, Heller worked with other students
