Oktoberfest set in Conover

The Conover Chamber of Commerce will sponsor Oktoberfest Saturday, Aug. 9, in the Conover Town Park Pavilion on Highway K East. Doors open and keg-tapping begins at 5 p.m.

The Jim Pekol Orchestra will play German music. The cost is $5 per person. There will also be paddle-wheel 50-50 raffles along with traditional German food for purchase.

“Come enjoy a summer evening in the beer garden and take a few spins on the dance floor,” said a chamber representative.

Old Hiles Fire Department truck gets new life as city park vehicle

The Hiles Fire Department purchased its Engine No. 5 in late 1983. Today, the 40-year-old truck has a new home.

The minutes of the September 1983 Hiles Town Board meeting record that a delegation of four firefighters and a mechanic were authorized to travel to Minnesota to inspect the 1974 International Loadstar mini-pumper that they had found for sale for $36,000.

Jaroslava Sobiskova — Jarka for short, a Slavic name meaning fierce and strong, and pronounced Yarka — is a complex name for a complex, multi-faceted and superbly talented woman.

This writer, experiencing trouble pronouncing her name, jokingly suggested calling her “Mazda,” to which she replied, “Zoom, zoom!” She is clever, funny and refuses to take herself too seriously.

Northwoodstock arranged Aug. 9

The 2014 Northwoodstock Music Festival is slated Saturday, Aug. 9, at Bent’s Camp, located at 6882 Helen Creek Road, Land O’ Lakes, gates open at noon.

The event will feature the music of Chasin Mason, Heartsfield, Taylor Davis, Harrison Marsh Band and Kevin Brandt, and an outdoor bar and food.

Jump Start Band Clinic offered at middle school

Northland Pines Middle School in Eagle River will offer a Jump Start Band Clinic Monday, Aug. 11, through Friday, Aug. 15, from 10 a.m. to noon in the middle school band room.

Jump Start is a week-long, summer program designed to give beginning band students a jump-start on learning how to play the instrument they will be playing in the band in the fall.

Middle school to host walkabouts Aug. 20-21

Northland Pines Middle School in Eagle River will be open for walkabouts Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 12:30 to 4 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 21, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Students will be able to  get a copy of their schedule, locate their locker, practice their combination and find their classrooms.

Antique show
The Eagle River Rotary Club held its 54th annual antique show and sale at the Eagle River Derby Track Friday and Saturday. Attendees talked antiques (above), admired jewelry, and had the chance to have damaged crystal, china, porcelain and pottery mended by Mary Lou’s Crystal Repair.
