Veterans benefits forum slated Saturday, Sept. 13

A veterans benefits forum, hosted by American Legion Reino Post 21, will be held Saturday, Sept. 13, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Windsor Center in Iron River, Mich. The forum aims to help veterans better utilize services available to them.

Presentations will cover various topics that affect veterans and their families including health care, educational assistance, Agent Orange benefits, women’s health, housing, long-term care, burial benefits and a variety of other important issues.

Assistance will be available at the forum to help veterans apply

Little Lambs to hold open house Aug. 28

St. Mary of the Snows Anglican Church will host an open house for the new Little Lambs Children’s Ministry Thursday, Aug. 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Rock Mission Community Center in Eagle River.

Little Lambs is a teaching program that will provide children with a faith-based curriculum supportive of Christian values.

The class is open to toilet-trained children of all Christian practices ages 3 to 5. Families can tour the facility and learn about the weekly program, which begins Tuesday, Sept. 9, and runs every Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The cost will be $50

Symphony to perform in Rhinelander

The Northwoods Concert Association will present the Milwaukee?Symphony Orchestra in concert at the Rhinelander High School auditorium Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m.

Advance ticket sales for the concert will be available after Sept. 1 until the night of the concert.

Tickets for adults will be $25 in advance

Historical museum plans open house this Sunday

Phelps Historical Museum will hold an open house Sunday, Aug. 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. Wine, cheese and beverages will be available at the museum.

A 50/50 raffle will be offered and donations to the building fund will be accepted. At the downtown park area at 2 p.m., author Bill Jamerson will perform a reenactment of the logging days.

Sampling of ethnic foods under the tent will be available

The Northwoods Community Blood Center will hold a Community Blood Drive Thursday, Sept. 4, from 2 to 6 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Phelps.

Cancer center sets Celebration of Life

James Beck Cancer Center will host the seventh annual Celebration of Life: Life is a Gift, Untie the Ribbons event Thursday, Aug. 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at James Beck Cancer Center on the grounds of Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital, located at 2251 N. Shore Dr. in Rhinelander.

Celebration of Life honors those whose lives have been touched by cancer and cancer survivors, and recognizes the contributions of their families and friends.

Sausage Fest set Aug. 31

The Eagle?River Lions Club will hold its inaugural Sausage Fest family fun day at Riverview Park in Eagle River Sunday, Aug. 31, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The event will include a five-kilometer (5K) fun run at 11:30 a.m., a Sausage Fest competition at 2 p.m., games, food, Oktoberfest beer, root beer floats and live music by the Bill Hassey Orchestra at noon.

There also will be a Lil’ Porkies fun run at 1 p.m.

Northland Adventure Quest brings Pines, Chinese students together

The Northland Adventure Quest — a two-week-long cultural experience engaging 26 Northland Pines School District students ages 10-14 with 20 Chinese students concluded with a closing ceremony last Thursday evening at Trees For Tomorrow in Eagle River.

Northland Pines SOAR Charter School advisors Kate Neville and Don Anderson instructed the students in a variety of settings from Aug. 4 to 14.

Nicolet Players auditions scheduled Sept. 15-16

Anyone interested in being a part of the Nicolet Players murder mystery production, “The Game’s Afoot,” is welcome to attend auditions Monday, Sept. 15, and Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. in the Nicolet College Theater in the Learning Resources Center.

“This is the perfect play for anyone who has little or no acting experience and has always wanted to be in a play,” said Jim Nuttall, Nicolet College Theater director.

“It’s brilliantly written, which makes it great for first-time actors, and the story line is hilarious which makes rehearsals a whole lot of fun,” added Nuttall.
