Pines’ Courtney Heller participates in Special Olympics Youth Summit

Special Olympics Wisconsin selected Courtney Heller of Eagle River as a Youth Activation Committee member to represent Team Wisconsin at the Youth Summit that was held in conjunction with the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in Princeton, N.J., June 14-21.

Heller, a Northland Pines  High School junior, flew out of Madison with the 62 athletes participating in USA Games, which only occurs every four years, like the Olympics.

Their send-off included a performance by UW-Madison Marching Band and an appearance by Bucky Badger, who did pushups for every athlete competing at USA Games.

Nicolet Foundation gives 308 scholarships

The Nicolet College Foundation has awarded a record 308 scholarships for the 2014-’15 academic year, nearly double the number awarded 10 years ago.

“Scholarships make it possible for many students to attend college who may otherwise not get the education they need to improve their lives,” said Heather Schallock, executive director of the Nicolet College Foundation.

“The foundation’s growth over the years has been due to the generous support of a growing number of donors and to each and every one of them we extend a huge thank you,” added Schallock.

In all, the foundation has awarded $361,000 in scholarships

Moonlight Run
Deerpath Stables in Conover recently donated $1,000 to the Pines Community Wellness Center’s Moonlight Run, a 5K run that will take place Saturday, July 12, at 10 p.m. in downtown Eagle River. All proceeds from the event will be used to cover the costs of maintaining and staffing the Wellness Center located at Northland Pines High School in Eagle River. Presentation on GMO food slated at Many Ways of Peace

Many Ways of Peace (MWP) in downtown Eagle River will hold its monthly Peace Cafe  featuring this month’s topic, “GMOs: The Truth is Hard to Swallow,” presented by Tina Koller of Eagle River Thursday, July 17, from noon to 1 p.m.

Hodag Country Festival scheduled July 10-13

The 37th annual Hodag Country Festival will take place in Rhinelander this Thursday through Sunday, July 10-13.

The 2014 country music lineup will include headliners Kenny Rogers, Josh Turner, Darius Rucker and Neal McCoy, along with 12 solo performers and groups who will take the main stage over four days.
