Relay kickoff slated Monday

Area volunteers are gearing up for the 2014 American Cancer Society Northwoods Relay For Life with the Northwoods Relay For Life Kickoff event set Monday, March 24, at Eagle Waters Resort located at 3958 Eagle Waters Road in Eagle River.

Doors open at 6 p.m. with registration, networking and information tables. The program will held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a special showing of the ESPN documentary “Into the Wind.”

The public is welcome to attend to learn more about the American Cancer Society and the Northwoods Relay For Life.

This will also be an opportunity for participants

Multi-platinum band to rock Derby hall

Gigg.com will present A Low Dose Show featuring the American multiplati­num band Fuel — whose new album, Puppet Strings, ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock chart this week — Friday, March 28, at the AMSOIL World Championship Derby Track Expo Hall in Eagle River.

Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale online for $5 in advance at fuelrocks.eventbrite.com. This is an age 21-and-older show.

Also scheduled to perform are the British rock band Half­way to New York and  local band 4th Floor will open the show. Nudge, from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, will host the after-show late into the night.

Proceeds from the show will benefit Operation Underground Railroad,

Elementary school offers disability-simulation activities
In an attempt to infom its teachers, paraprofessionals and administrators about what it’s like to live with a disability, Eagle River Elementary School (ERES) has set up disability-simulation training stations. The Northland Pines School District (NPSD) announced that the special education staff at Eagle River Elementary School is currently facilitating disability awareness training for teachers, paraprofessionals and administrators at the school.

Various stations are set up to simulate the experience of struggling through reading, visual discrimination, and writing and hearing deficits

Stop at ATM leads Gail Lovett to Nicolet’s echnology program

Interior decorator Gail Lovett of Three?Lakes didn’t have any immediate plans to go back to college until one day when she was standing at an ATM and saw a poster for the Architectural Technology program offered at Nicolet College.

“I got excited right away,” said Lovett. “I love the concept of home and everything that goes into creating a home. I saw it as a great fit for me and a good way for me to expand the skills and talents that I can offer clients.”

Lovett is set to graduate from the two-year associate degree program this May and then hopes to land a job with a local builder. And the chances of that happening look to be excellent,
