Youth art classes begin June 19

The Land O’ Lakes Area Artisans Inc. (LOLA) an­nounced its upcoming public offerings.

Summer youth art classes, designed by intern Olivia Heitz and under the guidance of Wendy Powalisz, LOLA program director, will begin Thursday, June 19, and run through Thursday, Aug. 21. There is no limit on the number of classes children can attend.

Heitz is a junior studying fine arts at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

All classes are offered two times a day, from 10 a.m. to noon

YMCA plans bus trip July 15

YMCA of the Northwoods will host a bus excursion to the Clauson Family Music Show in Coloma Tuesday, July 15. The coach bus will depart from the YMCA at 8 a.m. and return around 6 p.m.

Participants will see a live show, “1950s and ’60s Rock ’n’ Roll Show,” at the air conditioned Historic Barn Theatre in Coloma, have a buffet lunch, browse gift shops and pick up a treat from Coffee Shoppe.

In addition, the bus will make a stop at Rudolph Grotto Gardens in Rudolph. This garden is set in a area of trees and flowers, surrounded with man-made rock.

The cost for the trip, including lunch, show and grotto walk will be $85. Space is limited. Register by July 1.

Rummage sale planned June 21

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church ELCA in Eagle River will host its second annual rummage and bake sale Saturday, June 21, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church. Proceeds will benefit Relay For Life.

Items include furniture, sporting goods, children’s items, books, tools and many other items.

Homemade bakery goods will also be available to purchase. Paintings by Betty Gussick will be on display and available for purchase as well.

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is located at 5030 Highway 70 West.

Three Lakes Film Fest scheduled June 19-21

Three Lakes Center for the Arts will present the second annual Three Lakes Film Festival Thursday through Saturday, June 19 through 21. at 6:30 p.m. at the center. All films start at 7 p.m., with receptions for filmmaker at 6:30 p.m.

The festival  includes three  Wisconsin documentarians with an array of films covering wildlife and conservation, education, poetry and the spiritual journey of writers C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Milwaukee-based filmmaker Chip Duncan returns for a second year with two one-hour documentaries, each featuring the British writer, C.S. Lewis.

Honors band
Matthew McGill, an eighth-grader at Northland Pines, has been selected to participate in the 2014 Wisconsin Middle Level State Honors Band. McGill, who auditioned in Wausau, was one of 1,300 students who auditioned across Wisconsin at the Wisconsin Center for Music Education Honors Ensembles. He was one of 98 students to be selected and will play the tuba in the State Honors Band performance in Waunakee in November of 2014, with conductor Brian Balmages. Pines band director Forrest Mann will help McGill prepare for the performance.                        —Contributed Photo
