Muskies Inc. opens registration for Spring Classic tournament

Registration brochures have been sent out for the 34th annual Spring Classic Muskie Tournament June 14-15.

The Headwaters Chapter of Muskies Inc. again will host the event on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes.

Tournament Director Scott Samuels said it’s important to get applications in early because Muskies Inc. will be drawing for team starting positions.

The Northern Highlands Chapter of Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) observed its 13th anniversary and presented an endowment grant to Northland Pines School District (NPSD) in the amount of $10,000 in support of its shooting team program at the annual banquet held at  Whitetail Inn in St. Germain March 1.

The endowment is administered by Midwest USA Foundation Inc.

Michigan increases fines for poaching big bucks

New state laws designed to deter poaching of antlered bucks, especially those with trophy-sized racks, and to reduce recreational trespass are now in effect in Michigan, the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced last week.

The new Michigan laws make several changes to the fines and restitution payments for poaching deer, including a progressive pen­alty system.

For any deer with or without antlers, the base restitution will be $1,000; for any antlered deer, there will be an additional restitution of $1,000 plus; for antlered deer with eight to 10 points, an additional $500 will be assessed for each point; and for antlered deer with 11 or more points,

Deadlines near for removing ice shelters

The deadlines for ice anglers to remove ice fishing shelters are approaching, reminds Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials.
For inland Wisconsin waters, ice fishing shelters must be removed by the first Sunday following March 1 for waters south of Highway 64 and by the first Sunday following March 12 for waters north of Highway 64. For 2014,

Outdoor women plan outing at planetarium

The Outdoor Women’s Group will meet Sunday, March 9, at 2 p.m. at the Kovac Planetarium on Highway 8 east of Monico.
This outing is open to spouses and guests, and reservations are required by Wednesday, March 5.
The group is limited to 25 participants and the fee will be $8 per person.

Early trout season opens March 1

Wisconsin’s early catch-and-release trout season opens March 1 on streams, but it might take some work to reach during the earliest days of the season, state fish biologists say.
The early catch-and-release trout season opens this Saturday, March 1, at 5 a.m. and runs until midnight Sunday, April 27.
Most trout streams are open to early fishing with the exception of most Lake Superior

Turkey shoot set March 1

The Stateline Veteran’s of Foreign Wars Post 8400 of Land O’ Lakes will hold its annual turkey shoot and raffle Saturday, March 1, at Club 45 in Conover.

Three Lakes Lions to hold 61st Fishing Derby Saturday

The Three Lakes Lions Club will hold its 61st annual Ice Fishing Derby and raffles this Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at the grounds of the Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center on Superior Street.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest and the second-largest northern, walleye, bass and total panfish weight.

There also will be separate $50 prizes for the largest fish of any kind caught by a child 12 years old or younger. Youths, supervised by a parent, are welcome to participate.

There is no entry fee to participate in the derby,

Elk group schedules 15th banquet

The Northern Highland Chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will hold its 15th annual fundraiser banquet at Whitetail Inn in St. Germain Saturday, March 1.

There will be limited tickets available for the banquet, which includes a prime rib dinner, raffles and live and silent auctions. The committee will raffle approximately 30 firearms at the fundraising event. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m.
