Lions Club to hold 61st fishing derby

The Three Lakes Lions Club will hold its 61st annual Ice Fishing Derby and raffles Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m at the grounds of the Three Lakes Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center on Superior Street.
Cash prizes will be awarded for the largest and the second-largest northern, walleye, bass and total panfish weight.
There also will be separate $50 prizes for the largest fish of any kind caught by a child 12 years old or younger. Youths, supervised by a parent, are welcome to participate.

DNR develops new permit for fish habitat projects

Lakefront property owners statewide can now more quickly and easily create fish sticks habitat near their shoreline to benefit fish and improve fishing, state fisheries and habitat protection officials say.
A new streamlined permit available from the state and an easy step-by-step guide for fish sticks are now available on the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) website at dnr.wi.gov to help foster the projects, which involve placing trees in shallow water and anchoring them on the shore.
“Fish sticks projects are paying off in northern Wisconsin lakes by providing more critical habitat for fish and insects, birds, turtles and frogs,” said Scott Toshner, the DNR fisheries biologist who worked with partners on the fish sticks projects that placed hundreds of trees in the Eau Claire chain of lakes in Bayfield and

Women’s shooting league to hold meeting Feb. 13

The Eagle River chapter of A?Girl & A Gun Women’s Shooting League will hold a meeting Thursday, Feb. 13, at 6:30 p.m. at Eagle River Inn. Coffee and treats will be provided.
Certified weapons instructor Debra Johnson will lead the continuing safety series. Attendees have been learning safety and conceal carry laws during the winter series of classes.
The A Girl & A Gun league is a ladies-only organization established by women shooters for women shooters for pistol, rifle and shotgun sports.

Turkey shoot set in Conover

The Stateline VFW?Post 8400 of Land O’ Lakes will hold its annual turkey shoot and raffle Saturday, March 1, at Club 45 in Conover.
Shooting is set to begin at noon and will end at dusk. All shooters are welcome.
Competitors will display their marksmanship using only open sights.

With deep snows and cold temperatures persisting since November, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) wildlife officials are paying close attention to winter’s impacts on the state’s deer herd.
Wildlife managers across the state, and especially in the far north, have received several calls from concerned citizens, according to Kevin Wallenfang, state big game ecologist.
“After a tough winter that had an impact on deer numbers in 2013, this certainly isn’t what any of us had hoped for,” he said.

Phelps fishing tourney attracts 180 anglers

More than 180 anglers recently participated at the Phelps Lions Club’s 28th annual Great Northern Ice Fishing Tournament on Lac Vieux Desert in Vilas County.
“Despite the terrible blizzard conditions, fish were still caught,” said Lions Club President Mike McAdams. “Not as many as in previous years, but enough for us to award those anglers.”
There were contests for $100 each in the morning and afternoon for the largest fish caught in each category.

Whitetails Unlimited sets banquet Feb. 13

The North Country Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited Inc. (WTU) will sponsor a fundraising banquet Thursday, Feb. 13, at Eagle Waters Resort in Eagle River.
Tickets are $35 for a single ticket. There is a Feb. 11 deadline for tickets, and tickets will not be sold at the door.
The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. This event will feature a dinner, auction, door prizes, sporting equipment, limited-edition wildlife and outdoor art, firearms and Whitetails Unlimited collectibles.

Muskies Inc. plans banquet in Eagle River

The Headwaters Chapter of Muskies Inc. will host its 36th annual awards banquet and fundraiser Saturday, April 12, at Eagle River Inn & Resort.
A social hour will start at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be family-style, with all the trimmings. Hors ­d’oeuvres also will be served.
Awards, raffles and auctions will follow. The banquet will be open to the public and only 200 tickets will be sold, according to chapter president Bill Jacobs.

World renowned dog sledder to hold program at Ottawa

The Ottawa National Forest will hold a program on dog sledding at its visitor center Saturday, Feb. 15, from noon to 1 p.m.
Patty Lewison — a local musher and member of the Wisconsin Trail Blazers Sled Dog Club and the International Sled Dog Race Association — will be on hand to provide a dog-sled demonstration and answer questions.
Participants will meet Kea, Lewison’s lead sled dog, and check out sledding equip­ment close up.
