Revised fishing tournament rules to be topic of DNR public hearings

Draft changes to fishing tournament rules aimed at increasing tournament angler satisfaction while addressing concerns about crowding at boat ramps and fish mortality potentially associated with tournaments are the topic of public hearings in late October and early November.

The current fishing tournament rules have been in effect for more than three years and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has taken a look at the rules to identify areas for improvement, according to DNR Fisheries Director Mike Staggs.

Snomo safety class planned

The Frosty Snowmobile Club Inc. of Land O’ Lakes will conduct its 14th annual snowmobile safety class Dec. 27-28.

Classes will be taught by Mike Keintz, a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) certified snowmobile safety instructor, and assisted by several club members.

All students are required to have a DNR customer identification number, which may be obtained by calling DNR Customer Service from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 1-(888) 936-7463.

Students must be at least 12 years old and will receive their safety certificate from the DNR

Whitetails sets banquet Nov. 16

Whitetails Unlimited (WU) will sponsor a banquet Saturday, Nov. 16, at Gateway Lodge, located at 4103 Highway B in Land O’ Lakes.

The event will feature a buffet dinner, auction and a wide array of prizes including firearms, artwork and collectibles.

A social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $45 each, $25 for a spouse or $25 for youths 15 and younger. The ticket order deadline is Nov. 9. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Phelps Chamber of Commerce holds its 33rd Musky Classic
The Muskie Classic recently presented a $1,000 check and a free mount from Lax Taxidermy and the Phelps Chamber of Commerce to winners of the 33rd annual event. Taking part in the presentation were, from left, event coordinator Don Crass, first-place winner Jacob Munes of Kaukana with a 473?4-inch muskie and last year’s champion, Brian Fons of East Troy, with his winning mount of a 46-inch fish. The Phelps Chamber of Commerce recently held its 33th annual Midwest Musky Classic Tournament in Phelps.

Anglers from all over the state came and competed to catch the largest muskie for a prize of $1,000. More than 80 fishermen participated in the event on four local lakes.

Listening session slated for Powell Marsh plans

The public will have an opportunity at an upcoming listening session to share their views on the future direction for the Powell Marsh Wildlife Area in Vilas County with Department of Natural Resources (DNR)?administrators and Natural Resources Board members.

The session is set for Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Manitowish Waters Town Hall, located at Highway 51 and Airport Road in Manitowish Waters.

The process of revising the master plan for this 4,800-acre wildlife area near Manitowish Waters was initiated in August with the release of preliminary vision and goals and four conceptual management alternatives.
