Christman wins two awards for bear entry in WTA contest

Cindi Christman, owner of Beartooth Taxidermy in St. Germain, won two awards with her bear entry in the 2013 Wisconsin Taxidermists Association’s (WTA) annual state competition.

Her black bear entry received a first place in the Master’s Division large mammal category and was also the highest scoring bear at the show, earning her the President’s?Challenge Award.

Deer hunter wildlife survey begins

The opening of the archery deer season Sept. 14 marked the beginning of the 2013 deer hunter wildlife survey.

“Deer hunters often ask if there is a way they can tell state wildlife officials what they are or are not seeing from their deer stand,” said Jay Watson, wildlife survey technician with the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “This survey provides them with the means to do that.”

DNR program rewards hunters who recruit new people to sport

Hunters who are able to recruit three new people into hunting would be eligible for a half price license the following year, under a new Department of Natural Resources (DNR) program that seeks to encourage active hunters to introduce new people to hunting.

“Becoming a mentor may take a year to accomplish. However, it comes with immediate — as well as lifetime — rewards,” said Keith Warnke, DNR hunting and shooting sports coordinator.

Pro-Am set this weekend

The 37th annual Paul’s Memorial Pro-Am Musky Classic, set on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes this Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 21-22, is still accepting entries for the catch-and-release event.

The tournament, sponsored by the Riedel family and headquartered at Hia­watha Hideaway on Duck Lake, is one of the longest-running catch-and-release muskie fishing events in the North Woods.

“We are looking forward to the 37th annual Memorial Pro-Am and seeing all of the great sportsmen and -women who helped make my father’s tournament the success it has become,” said tournament coordinator Paul Riedel Jr. of Eagle River.

Duck season starts Saturday

Hunters looking forward to the opening of Wisconsin’s 2013 duck season in the North and the Mississippi River zones starting Saturday, Sept. 21, should find good numbers of ducks, according to Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials.
