Hunting in state parks, walleyes lead resource stories during 2013

From the first winter free-fishing weekend to the first year of expanded hunting in state parks to the Wisconsin Walleye Initiative, here is a look back at the natural resources issues and highlights of 2013.

Wisconsin’s first winter Free Fishing Weekend was Jan. 19 and 20. Residents and nonresidents alike could fish anywhere in Wisconsin for free. No licenses or trout stamps were needed.

Hunter-supplied numbers indicated that 366,747 deer were harvested

Number of ice anglers on rise

As ice fishing gets under way in the North Woods,  state fisheries officials say there are a growing number of ice anglers drilling down into this favorite winter sport.

“The colder weather in recent weeks has frozen smaller lakes much earlier than last year, so we’re looking forward to a nice, long season,” said Mike Staggs, Department of Natural Resources (DNR)

Phelps Lions plan tourney

The Phelps Lions Club will hold its 28th annual Great Northern Ice Fishing Tournament, slated for Saturday, Jan. 25, on Lac Vieux Desert.

The cost of $45 per person includes an evening meal at the Derby Track Loft in Eagle?River. The bar will open at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 5:30. Meal-only tickets will cost $15.

For an entry form, call (715) 545-3327 or (312) 391-4991. Entry forms must be received by Jan. 21. Registrations the day of the tournament will be $50, which includes the meal.

There will be an early bird drawing for all registrations received by Jan. 9.

Trout Unlimited to hold meeting

The Northwoods Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at Trees for Tomorrow Monday, Jan. 13, at 6 p.m.

The program will feature a presentation by Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Greg Matzke, who will discuss how he manages trout here in the North Woods.

Meeting for predator hunt set at Great Escape Jan. 3

The fifth annual predator hunt will be held Jan. 3-12, beginning with a meeting at Great Escape in Phelps Friday, Jan. 3, at 7 p.m.

Hunting will begin immediately after the meeting and is slated to end at noon Sunday, Jan. 12. Entry forms are available at Great Escape.

The entry fee is $40 per team, plus three nonperishable items, which must be taken to the meeting.
