Women’s group plans next trip to Maple Fest

The Outdoor Women’s Group will visit the Maple Syrup Festival Saturday, April 5, in Phelps.

The group will meet for tree-tapping demonstrations, guided bus tours of local sugarbush operations, an indoor craft show and lunch at The Maple Café.

The event is free, participation in the raffle will cost $10,

Nicolet ATV Club plans ride Saturday

The Three Lakes Nicolet ATV Club  is planning a club ride this Saturday, April 5, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., according to club spokesperson Mark Kirby.

The event, called the Spring Slush Run, is an effort to get ATV riders to club sponsors located off the ATV routes.

“We are being proactive and want to get to those businesses that support the club but are not accessible by the established ATV routes,” said Kirby. “So we will use the frozen lakes to access those businesses.”

Kirby said there will be ATV events at each location,

Deer herd status meetings for 2014 to be held during spring hearings

Planning for the 2014 deer hunting season is underway and wildlife biologists with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invite anyone interested in discussing Wisconsin’s deer herd to attend deer herd status meetings.

In 2014, these meetings will be held in conjunction with DNR and Wisconsin Conservation Congress’ annual spring fish and game hearings Monday, April 14, at 7 p.m.

Muskies Inc. sets banquet

Northwoods Muskies Inc. will hold its annual kickoff banquet at The Pointe Resort in Minocqua Saturday, April 5. The public is welcome to attend.

The fundraiser will feature a spaghetti dinner, raffles, a live auction and guest speaker Ken Jackson.

Ticket cost for the evening will be $20 for adults and $10 for children.

DNR seeks angler feedback on expanding trout seasons

Moving the start of the early trout season to Jan. 1 and expanding the early season to all inland waters to provide more fishing opportunities are among the options Wisconsin anglers can weigh in on during the 2014 Spring Fish and Wildlife Hearings, held April 14 at sites in all Wisconsin counties.

The six advisory questions on trout topics, spring hearings questionnaire questions 22-27, are the latest step in a comprehensive review of trout fishing in Wisconsin launched in 2011.

The questions are designed to help gauge support for possible season changes,

Predator hunt
 Northern Waters Angling and Archery recently held its sixth annual Northwoods Predator Hunt. Twenty-eight hunters participated this year and four coyotes were harvested. Mitch Ellis and Pete Blicharz took first place with three coyotes, weighing in at 79 pounds, including a 27-pound coyote. Jim Randall and Clint Kittleson took second with one more coyote weighing in at 25 pounds. Land trust plans snowshoe outing

The Northwoods Land Trust will be hosting a free guided snowshoe hike and bonfire this Saturday, March 22, at 5 p.m. at the Dugan Squash Lake Nature Preserve west of Rhinelander.

“The public is invited to help celebrate the beginning of spring at this beautiful property,” said Conservation Specialist Trisha Moore.

The event will include snowshoeing across a small bay on Squash Lake to the esker peninsula, where participants will enjoy a bonfire with food and drinks provided.

Moore said that interested participants should meet at 5 p.m.

No lead lures allowed in 3 Vilas lakes

Beginning April 1, the use of tackle containing lead will no longer be allowed on three research lakes in the Northern Highland-American Le­gion State Forest in Vilas County.

The three lakes — Escanaba, Pallette and Nebish — will restrict the use of lead-containing jig heads, split-shot and weights less than one ounce, or any lead-containing items smaller than one inch in any dimension.

A limited supply of non-lead alternatives will be available free of charge at the Escanaba Lake Research Station, according to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Spring turkey permit levels reduced; hunters concerned over winter losses

Remaining?over-the-counter permits in turkey management zones 6 and 7 will not be issued and over-the-counter permits in zones 4 and 5 will be reduced by 25% in response to hunter feedback requesting a conservative approach to the number of permits issued for this spring’s hunt due to concerns that increased winter mortality has depressed turkey numbers.

Although Department of Natural Resources (DNR) biologists recognize that spring harvests do not play a significant role in wild turkey population dynamics, it is clear that prolonged periods of cold and deep snow have impacted turkeys throughout the northern part of the state.

Remaining turkey tags to go on sale

Remaining permits for the 2014 spring turkey hunting season will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis beginning Monday, March 17.

Designated zones will be sold each day starting at 10 a.m. Sales will continue through midnight or until all permits for that zone or time period are sold out.

The spring 2014 turkey hunting season runs from April 16 through May 27, with the youth hunt being held April 12-13. The season is divided into six time periods, each running from Wednesday through the following Tuesday.

In total, 237,765 permits were available
