Grouse society sets St. Germain banquet

The Chain O’ Lakes Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society (RGS) will host its eighth annual Conservation and Sportsmen’s Banquet Thursday, Aug. 28, at Whitetail Inn, located at 9083 Highway 70 West in St. Germain.

The banquet will include a social hour at 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m.

The evening will feature live and silent auctions, games, drawings and door prizes, including a selection of quality firearms, artwork and collectibles.

Marksmanship event scheduled Sept. 6-7

Learning proper safety and rifle marksmanship skills will be the focus of a Project Appleseed two-day event coming this Sept. 6-7 to the North Woods.

Sponsored by the Eagle River Chapter of A Girl and A Gun Women’s Shooting League, the event will be held at the C.W. Caywood Shooting Range located in Arbor Vitae.

Project Appleseed is a program that instructs citizens on the traditional rifle marksmanship skills that have been passed down from generation to generation.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has introduced new experimental panfish bag limits on 110 lakes statewide, including 10 lakes in Vilas County, the entire Three Lakes Chain of lakes and 16 other water bodies in Oneida County.

Steve Hewett, DNR fisheries section chief , said the goal of the changes is to improve the average size of panfish in lakes that are not achieving their potential.

He said the proposed rules follow three years of angler surveys,

Crossbow licenses offered for Wisconsin deer hunters

With bonus permit sales and archery and crossbow seasons just around the corner, license sales have begun to increase for the fall deer seasons.

New laws have established two kinds of deer hunting licenses applicable to archery and crossbow seasons, according to Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officials.

A crossbow license will allow hunting deer and small game with a crossbow. An archer license will only allow hunting with what is typically considered archery gear — a bow drawn and held through the effort of the person releasing it (this excludes crossbows).

Antlerless deer tags available starting Aug. 18

Bonus antlerless deer carcass tags are available for purchase starting Monday, Aug. 18, at 10 a.m., but no permits are available in this three-county area.

Antlerless tags will be sold at a rate of one per person per day. Sales will continue until sold out or until the 2014 deer hunting season ends.

Plum Creek DU to hold banquet

The Plum Creek chapter of Ducks Unlimited (DU) in Sayner will hold its 2014 summer banquet Tuesday, Aug. 26, at Clearview Supper Club on Big St. Germain Lake in St. Germain, and tickets are available now for the general public.

Tickets are priced at $50 per person, $90 for couples or $275 for sponsors. All tickets will be held at the door.

Funny Farm Fisheries is now offering fee fishing for rainbow trout in Sayner off Plum Lake Drive. The business will clean and pack any fish caught on location.       —Contributed Photo

Funny Farm Fisheries — a fee fishing area for rainbow trout — recently opened for business in Sayner and will hold a grand opening celebration during Colorama this fall.

The business is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at 2916 Plum Lake Dr., according to CEO Russ Davis. Kerri We­berg serves as president and Todd Weberg is vice president.

Fall turkey permits to remain at same level in northern zones
The Department of Natural Resources has issued more than 96,000 permits for the fall turkey hunting season, including 1,000 tags in Zone 7 here. Experts said winter mortality  was localized, so the permit level was not lowered.                 —STAFF PHOTO

Fall turkey permit availability in 2014 will be equal to the number offered during the 2013 fall season, including 1,000 permits in Zone 7 for units in this region of the North Woods.

A total of 96,700 permits will be available statewide, with permits allocated to specific turkey management zones based on the amount of habitat available and relative size of turkey population.
