Sayner-Star Lake Lions plan Plum Lake Ice Fishing Tourney

The 12th annual edition of the Plum Lake Ice Fishing Tournament will be hosted by the Sayner-Star Lake Lions Club Saturday, Feb. 8, with $700 in cash and thousands more in merchandise prizes to be awarded, according to event organizers.

The entry fee for the tourney is $25, and tickets are now available from Lions Club members; Up North Traders,?Sayner?Mobil Express and the Sayner Pub all in Sayner; at Island City Lanes in Minocqua; and 70 West Body Shop in Eagle River.

Fishing will take place entirely on Plum Lake from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., with awards and prize giveaways beginning at 4 p.m. at the Sayner Recreation Building. Fish registration will return to the lake this year at the south shore public pier access.

Cash prizes will be awarded in northern pike, walleye, perch, crappie and bluegill categories.

Women shooters to hold meeting

Area women are welcome attend the meeting of the Eagle River Chapter of A Girl and A Gun women’s shooting league Thursday, Jan. 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Eagle River Inn. Coffee and treats will be served.

A Girl and A Gun Women’s Shooting League is a ladies-only organization established by women shooters for women shooters for pistol, rifle and shotgun sports.

The league is designed to take beginners to whatever skill level they want to achieve, and provide experienced shooters with more opportunities.

Predator hunt set in Conover

Northern Waters Angling and Archery in Conover will host its sixth annual predator hunt Friday, Feb. 7, beginning with a registration meeting at 6 p.m. at Northern Waters.

Ending ceremonies will be held at Northern Waters at noon Sunday, Feb. 16. All animals should be brought in at this time for photo opportunities and door prizes.

Whitetails Unlimited and Miller Beer of the Northwoods of Eagle River will help sponsor this tournament and will donate door prizes.

Trappers class set in Michigan

The ninth annual Midwinter Trappers Workshop will be held Saturday, Feb. 1, at the community center in Hermansville, Mich. beginning at 9 a.m.

The all-day event will feature free admission, free trapping supplies for youths, and trapping and fur-handling demonstrations.

Rich Clark from North American Fur Auctions and Willow Tree Fur will prepare raccoon, mink, muskrat and other furs for market. He also will answer questions on properly handling additional kinds of furs.

Names sought for ethics award

Nominations for the 17th annual La Crosse Tribune/Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Hunter Ethics Award will be accepted through Jan. 15.

Bob Lamb, the retired outdoors editor of the La Crosse Tribune, founded the award with retired DNR conservation warden supervisor Steve Dewald and retired UW-La Crosse instructor Jerry Davis.

Chief Conservation Warden Todd Schaller joined the award committee last year.

Wisconsin’s first winter Free Fishing Weekend was Jan. 19 and 20. Residents and nonresidents alike could fish anywhere in Wisconsin for free. No licenses or trout stamps were needed.

Number of ice anglers on rise

As ice fishing gets under way in the North Woods,  state fisheries officials say there are a growing number of ice anglers drilling down into this favorite winter sport.

“The colder weather in recent weeks has frozen smaller lakes much earlier than last year, so we’re looking forward to a nice, long season,” said Mike Staggs, Department of Natural Resources (DNR)

Phelps Lions plan tourney

The Phelps Lions Club will hold its 28th annual Great Northern Ice Fishing Tournament, slated for Saturday, Jan. 25, on Lac Vieux Desert.

The cost of $45 per person includes an evening meal at the Derby Track Loft in Eagle?River. The bar will open at 4:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 5:30. Meal-only tickets will cost $15.

There will be an early bird drawing for all registrations received by Jan. 9.

Trout Unlimited to hold meeting

The Northwoods Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at Trees for Tomorrow Monday, Jan. 13, at 6 p.m.

The program will feature a presentation by Department of Natural Resources fisheries biologist Greg Matzke, who will discuss how he manages trout here in the North Woods.
