New Heiting book takes readers deer hunting in the North Woods

Steve Heiting’s obsession for hunting whitetailed deer in the big woods of the upper Great Lakes states and Canada has resulted in a new book.

Heiting, who hails from St. Germain and is the managing editor of Musky Hunter magazine, has written, edited or contributed to 20 different books about muskie fishing. Now he made boot tracks in a different direction with the release of his first hunting book, “Hunting Northwoods Bucks.”

Markus Malyuk of Phillips and Jason Baratka of Marshfield caught eight fish that topped 30 inches to win the  34th annual Spring Classic of Champions Muskie Tournament on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes last weekend.

The two anglers were part of an 87-team field that competed in the tournament, sponsored by the Headwaters Chapter of Muskies Inc. Last year, there were 74 teams in the two-day event.

The tourney paid $14,000 in cash prizes for first through 10th places,

Trapping class slated June 28 in Sugar Camp

The Wisconsin Trappers Association will hold its District 3 Rendezvous Saturday, June 28, from 8 a.m. to 4 the Sugar Camp Town Hall, located at 4056 Camp Four Road.

The event is free to all ages and will feature vendors, raffles, food, demonstrations and games.

Muskie tourney set in Minocqua on 6 lake groups

Northwoods Muskies Inc. Chapter 61 will hold its inaugural Northwoods Musky Open Fundraising Tournament Saturday, June 28.

A total of six lake groups surrounding the Minocqua, area have been designated for tournament waters for this family- and conservation-oriented event.

Prizes will be awarded for top three places with more than $1,000 in gift cards from The Musky Shop. A junior angler prize will be awarded for the longest muskie caught by a youth 16 years or younger.
