Six area teams finish in top 10 in PMTT tourney on Eagle Chain

The Professional Musky Tournament Trail (PMTT) visited the Eagle River Chain of Lakes last weekend, with several local teams placing in the top 10.

First place in the PMTT went to Nate Osfar of Marathon and Matt Raley of Arbor Vitae. They won the tournament by catching three muskies of 34 inches, 36 inches and 41¾ inches, all on bucktails.

Northland Pines trapshooters take third at conference meet

The Northland Pines High School trap team recently competed at its inaugural conference shoot-off at the Langlade County Trap Club in Antigo.

The school recently formed the trapshooting team along with the Langlade County Falcon Youth team and started shooting competitively with several schools in northeastern Wisconsin.

Since then five area teams have been recruited

Guides/Kids day planned July 10

The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, along with the Eagle River Guides Association, will host the 34th annual Guides/Kids Day Thursday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Youths age 7 to 12 may register at the Vilas County Fairgrounds from 10 to 11 a.m. to fish with a North Woods guide or at the trout hatchery in Watersmeet, Mich.

Boating class starts June 30 in Eagle River

The Department of Natural Resources will offer a boating safety class at Northland Pines High School from June 30 to July 2 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Successful completion of the program will result in certification allowing participants to operate a motorboat or a personal watercraft upon reaching 12 years of age.

Anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1989,

Turkey harvest increases 10%

Despite a long and severe winter, Wisconsin turkey hunters registered a total of 41,815 birds during the 2014 spring turkey hunting season — a 10.7% increase from the 2013 spring season.

“I think many hunters were pleasantly surprised by the number of birds they were seeing in the field, given the prolonged winter weather,” said Scott Walter, upland wildlife ecologist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR). “It certainly appears that impacts were localized, with winter flocks inhabiting areas without access to food likely seeing the greatest impacts.”

Zone 1 produced the highest overall turkey harvest at 12,188 birds,
