Board passes town tax levy, addresses other taxpayer issues

Posted

A recent Phelps special town meeting of the electors was held to resolve several open issues prior to 2024.

During the meeting, a motion was passed to approve the total town tax levy for 2023 of $1,447,019 to be collected in 2024.

A second motion to establish compensation for elected town officials for the next term of office also passed.

At the public budget hearing prior to the special town meeting, Chairman Steve Doyen announced that the owners of the Phelps hospital building signed an affidavit for the town to purchase the building for $1.

Upon doing so, the owners must vacate the building by Dec. 15 of this year, when the town will move forward with demolition and clean-up.

The town purchased a new fire truck, and received $90,000 for the sale of the old fire truck, which will be applied to the loan.

The entire budget was gone over page-by-page and many questions and comments were made by taxpayers, which the town responded to.

Doyen thanked everyone for attending at the end of the meeting.
