Cougars dominate the trenches in 44-7 win over Pines

Posted

It was senior night at Northland Pines High School Friday night, and the Coleman Cougars spoiled that with a 44-7 win over Northland Pines as they ran for nearly 400 yards and six rushing touchdowns on the night.

Northland Pines scored its own rushing touchdown early in the second quarter for the team’s only score.

Coleman won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half, so Northland Pines had a shot to make a statement early. In what looked like a miscommunication on the game’s second play, senior quarterback Aiden Minx’s pass found the hands of a Coleman defender near midfield, and the Cougars took over.

Cougar quarterback Cole Berth found the end zone from a short distance after a handful of plays to get there, and the visitors were up 8-0 early. The Eagles failed to get much going on their second drive against a stout defense, leading to a Tyler Vojta punt. Vojta pinned the Cougars deep in their own territory after a booming kick, but it didn’t take long for Coleman to strike again. With 6:07 left in the first, the Cougars got their second score after marching down the field fairly easily through the run attack. The two-point conversion was blown up in the backfield, and the score remained 14-0. That was the score after the first quarter as the Eagles were on the attack. A good offensive drive led Pines into Coleman territory, and junior Tucker Brock finished the drive by plunging in to score to cut the lead to 14-7 early in the second. That’s as close as it would get as Coleman cruised to victory via rushing touchdowns. It turned out to be a 36-7 at halftime, and the Cougars scored once more in the second half to make it a 44-7 game.

Northland Pines fell to 4-3 (2-3) on the season and will travel to play Oconto Falls next Friday at 7 p.m.
