Department receives new fire engine at north station

Posted

The Phelps Fire Department recently received a new Pierce pumper-tanker fire engine, which is currently in service at the Phelps Fire Station North.

According to Chief Norm Mesun, the engine replacement was needed due to National Fire Protection Agency requirements.

The new truck has 3000 gallons of water onboard, coupled with a 1500 gallon per minute capacity pump.

“In addition to the new pumper-tanker, we are also able to bring 4000 gallons of water in the department’s other trucks to assist on calls,” said Mesun. “Plus, we have available mutual aid tenders and water drafting from local sources when needed.”

The new truck is equipped with all the hose and fittings for fire suppression, along with several self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) units.

In addition to those features, the vehicle also has rescue equipment complimented by a battery-powered spreader/cutter (JAWS) unit.

This is a fully compliant first-attack or initial response rescue vehicle.

This unit will enhance the department’s service to the properties served by Fire Station North.

“There are several dedicated, well-trained fire department members that live near the north station to provide the initial manpower for this unit,” added Mesun. “It is a beautiful and functional unit for us all to be proud of.”

It was because this purchase was made with the option and approval of the town board and the support of the taxpayers that this equipment was able to be upgraded for the safety and security of the citizens.

“This improvement is in addition to the recently improved land development for the helicopter landing pad,” said Mesun. “We recently used the pad for two successful helicopter landings for medical emergencies in that area of our town.”

The department attributes the purchase to the great support that was provided by the taxpayers, fundraising efforts by the department and community donations.
