Eagle boys edge Mosinee, but lose battle at Medford

Posted

The Northland Pines boys basketball team pulled out a tough Great Northern Conference (GNC) game against rival Mosinee 53-49 in the fieldhouse last Tuesday.
The Eagles came out of the gate fast, building a 9-2 lead before the visitors went on a 22-3 run to take a 24-12 advantage. Pines did not panic, however, and came roaring back to tie the score at 28-28 at the break.
“We put together a nice half,” said Pines coach Terry Klemett. “The guys started off well and then there was a lid on the rim. But we stayed aggressive on both sides of the ball and that helped us close the gap.”
The second half saw the Eagles and Mosinee battle back and forth, with Pines taking a five-point lead with four (4) minutes remaining in the contest. Mosinee went on a run of their own to take a six-point lead with two (2) minutes remaining before the Eagles made a final push to take the lead by five points and eventually secure the 53-49 victory.
Mylo Albrecht led Pines with 23 points, followed by Jonathan Miller with 10 points. Jack Albrecht and Ethan Miller each contributed seven points. Miller (Jonathan) grabbed eight rebounds, while Miller (Ethan) had six boards and A.J. Muench had five. Muench also had four assists to aid the offense.
“We played a great basketball game and we ran our game plan perfectly,” said Klemett. “It was a huge win for us and I’m happy for our team. They deserved that win.”
Medford loss
The Eagles traveled to Medford Friday for another GNC game and lost at Raider Hall 67-52. The home team shot well throughout the first half, taking a 10-point lead into the break at 35-25.
“We did not shoot the ball that well, but we were playing hard,” said Klemett.
Medford came out fast in the second and shot the lights out in the first 5 minutes to take a 20-point lead to secure the 15-point win.
“We shot poorly and they shot the lights out,” said Klemett. “It’s tough to win here, and when you combine cold shooting to the mix, it will not end up in your favor.”
Pines made just 7 of 31 three-point shots in the game for 23%. The Eagles made 15 of 38 two-point shots for 39%. Medford, on the other hand, dropped 10 of 26 three-point shots for 38% and 13 of 26 two-point shots for 50%.
Mylo Albrecht led Pines with 13 points, followed by Jack Albrecht with 11, Ethan Miller with 10, and Muench and Jonathan Miller with seven points apiece. Muench and Jonathan Miller each had seven rebounds, and Jack Albrecht dished out five assists.
Pines, 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the GNC, was scheduled to play at Antigo on Tuesday of this week in a GNC game and will host Rib Lake in a nonconference game this Thursday, Jan. 16, at 6 p.m. The Eagles will then host Gillett in a nonconference game Saturday, Jan. 18, at 4 p.m.
