The Northland Pines varsity volleyball team came away with a commanding but close 3-1 victory in an intense home non-conference match with Wausau East Tuesday night. With a double-digit win in the opening set, 25-15, the Eagles lost the second set 23-25 before winning consecutive sets 25-20 and 25-23 to claim victory.
“We played well. (Senior Setter) Bella Nowak played a smart game at the net as she always does, and she pulled us through,” said Northland Pines Head Coach Julie Smith after the win.
Smith was also impressed with the team’s defensive execution throughout the match as the team battled in tight sets towards the back end of the night. She specifically mentioned the performance of libero Eden Smith.
“Our serve-receive did very well. Sophomore Eden Smith, our libero, was great,” she stated.
The team gels well together, which was seen during the match on Tuesday night. The players have taken it upon themselves to create a strong bond.
“I think they all really like each other,” explained Smith. “We do work on that. Bella and Maria Krueger have been very responsible for that since they joined the team.” The team also celebrated parents' night before the match started, as each player was introduced with their parents.
The team travels to Mosinee tonight for a Great Northern Conference match that starts at 7 p.m.
