Free fishing seminars offered for area youth

Free fishing seminars for children ages 5 to 13 will be held Saturday, July 25, and Saturday, Aug. 15, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Vilas County Fairgrounds.

Members of Headwaters Chapter 12 of Muskies, Inc., along with local fishing guides, will provide instruction on fish identification, fishing techniques, slip-bobber rigging, knot tying and other angling skills.

Participants will learn about fishing regulations, license requirements, fish habitat, catch-and-release practices, boating safety, responsible stewardship of natural resources and preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species. Demonstrations will also cover casting techniques, netting fish and proper fish handling.

Each child will receive a goody bag and educational materials and will be eligible to win prizes including rods and reels, tackle boxes, lures and other fishing equipment.

The seminars are being offered for the 34th year by Headwaters Chapter 12 of Muskies, Inc. For more information, contact Carol Heffner at 715-891-0293.
