Lake Superior trout harvest opens this week A quota of 15,000 fish for the season

Posted

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminded anglers this week that the Lake Superior Trout season opened Monday of this week (Dec. 1) and runs through Sept. 25, 2025, or until the 15,000 trout quota is met.

Lake Superior Wisconsin waters are split between two units, with one being the Western Arm and the other being the Apostle Island region. The Apostle Island region sees more fishing, so the season will close early if that quota is met before Sept. 25, 2025.

Anglers have a bag limit of three fish from Western Arm waters, while a two-fish bag limit is set for the Apostle Island region waters. In both management areas, trout need to be at least 15 inches long for harvest, and only one fish over 25 inches can be kept.

Anyone fishing must purchase a 2024-25 general fishing license along with a Great Lakes Salmon and Trout stamp to harvest any trout. For more information on fishing for lake trout, visit dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/Fishing/lakesuperior
