Feed Our Rural Kids (FORK) has issued a $12,000 Legacy Gift to the weekend backpack program at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Eagle River.
“Our Legacy Gift program was established to financially support our area’s nonprofit organizations, also in the business of feeding children,” said FORK President Perry Pokrandt. “This legacy gift is another example of FORK’s commitment to helping feed children from food-insecure homes in our area.”
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church created the area’s first weekend backpack program and now sends home about 120 backpacks every weekend with children attending school within the Northland Pines and Phelps school districts.
Through the church’s weekend backpack program, children from food insecure homes are provided the equivalent of two supplemental meals to take home every Friday of the school year.
“FORK is committed to the long-term success of the area’s weekend backpack programs,” Pokrandt said. “This is a big task, and we want it to be clear that we fully support the time and energy of all the volunteers who work to make this program possible.”
Through the legacy gift, FORK’s goal is to shine the spotlight on the efforts of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church congregations.
“We hope this additional focus will aid in the weekend backpack program’s funding efforts within this congregation,” Pokrandt added. He went on to say FORK is confident that the utilization of their legacy fund assets to support efforts like the Northwoods’ weekend backpack programs makes a difference for kids and for Prince of Peace’s backpack program.
“If your organization currently is feeding children or has an idea on how to create a new program that will nutritionally support our area’s kids, they invite you to reach out to FORK at info@feedourruralkids.org and discuss the possibility of receiving a legacy fund gift,” he concluded.
