Local quilters send comfort worldwide through Lutheran World Relief

Posted

At a recent Sunday service at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Eagle River, Pastor Peter Kufahl blessed quilts displayed in the sanctuary before they were packed for shipping.

The quilts, sewn by local quilters Donna Liedtke, Karla Lokker, Carolyn Gleisner, Angie Korwitz and Cindy Gauger, are donated each year to various organizations.

“It’s all about the recipients and how grateful they must be. We think of the families taking these quilts into their homes, and that just makes you tear up,” Liedtke said. “We look around at our beautiful area in the North Woods and remember that some of these quilts will go to countries where there is no color: the Far East, desert areas and Africa. They receive a quilt from us that is bright and beautiful, but practical, too.”

This year, 107 quilts were boxed and sent to Iron River, Mich., before heading to the Lutheran World Relief Distribution Center in Minneapolis.

From there, they will be distributed worldwide. Since 1969, the church quilters have donated 3,900 quilts to Lutheran World Relief.
