Maxine McNichols Weinbrod

Maxine McNichols Weinbrod died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, April 24, 2026. She was 97 years old.

Born February 1, 1929, in Joliet, Illinois, she graduated from St. John's Catholic Grade school, Saint Francis Academy (class of 1947) and was educated at the College of St Francis. She worked at the Joliet Herald News as Society Editor until the birth of her children.

Maxine married the love of her life, Lawrence D Weinbrod, on June 2, 1951. Together they raised their two daughters near family and childhood friends.

She was active in her children’s school activities at St Paul the Apostle school and was a member of the Visitation and Aid Society.

In 1973, she moved to Moline, Illinois when Larry was transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal. After 14 years enjoying new friends and the Quad Cities malls, they retired to the place where they spent their honeymoon - the Weinbrod family vacation home on Big Lake in Three Lakes, Wisconsin. The 103 year old property became the generational gathering place for memories.

Maxine quickly became involved in the Three Lakes Women’s club, earning a Woman of the Year award. She was active in several bridge groups. She tried her skills at golf, downhill skiing and dart ball. She found many new friends who shared her love of shopping and dining. She and Larry traveled to warmer climates during the winter months and enjoyed cruises with friends to Alaska and the Caribbean. They fulfilled their final dream trip to Ireland in 2010.

Preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence D Weinbrod (2024); her parents, William (1977) and Rose Vergo McNichols (1993); her sister, Beverly McNichols (1993); brother-in-law, Ron Johnson (2011); and her granddaughter, Erin Weinbrod Hennessy (1978).

Survived by her daughter, Kathie (Mike) Hennessy of Joliet; and her daughter, Kim (Carl) Greene of Virginia. Loving grandmother, of Elizabeth Hennessy, Nicholas Greene, Kevin (Kelly Allen) Hennessy, Christopher Greene and Patrick Greene, and her granddaughter by marriage Ginger Greene (Lee) Perry. Loving great-grandmother, to Owen Hennessy, Isabelle, Teagan, and Kara Greene, and Brooke and Brianna Perry. Loving sister, to Moninne McNichols Johnson; and all of her Gancarczyk, McCoy, Crane, and Johnson nieces and nephews.

Cremation rites and arrangements by Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Private Internment will be held at a later date.

Memorials would be appreciated to the Visitation and Aid Society, Three Lakes Women’s Club Scholarship Fund, St. Therese Catholic Church or the charity of your choice.
