Three former standout athletes and a State Champion boys golf team will be inducted into the Eagle River/Northland Pines High School Athletic Hall of Fame (HOF) later this month.
The inductees who make up the 24th HOF class include Jim Bradford, Shawn Carter and Jinelle Zaugg-Siergiej. The 1986 boys golf team will be inducted in the HOF team category.
All the athletes will be honored at a ceremony Friday, Aug. 28, at the Northland Pines High School auditorium beginning at 4:30 p.m. The Northland Pines 2026 State Champion boys hockey team also will be recognized at the ceremony.
According to HOF Committee Chairman Larry Snedden, teammates, family, friends and fans of Northland Pines athletics are invited to attend the induction ceremony.
Snedden said a highlight of the program is when each of the inductees is introduced by a presenter and each inductee recounts their time as an Eagle.
“It’s heartwarming to listen to the acceptance speeches from each inductee,” said Snedden. “Many sports memories are shared and it’s amazing how many great relationships were built during their athletic careers at Northland Pines.”
The inductees also will be introduced at halftime of the varsity football game later that evening between Northland Pines and Ashland at 7 p.m., which is billed as the Hall of Fame Game.
Following the game, the inductees, family members and friends are invited to a reception at the Braywood, located at 4109 Braywood Lane, Eagle River.
The following is a description of each inductee’s achievements that will be on their hall of fame plaque. The HOF is located in the hallway adjacent to the fieldhouse in the high school. A new feature at the hall of fame is the ability to view the inductee photos and biographies on an interactive touch-screen display.
Jim Bradford, a 1989 Northland Pines High School graduate, was a six-time letterwinner in football and hockey and served as a captain for both teams during his senior season. On the gridiron, Jim was a member of the 1986 squad that reached the State Finals at Camp Randall Stadium. His senior season, he earned All-Conference honors as both a guard and linebacker, as well as All-Region and honorable mention All-State recognition as a linebacker. During that season that resulted in a playoff berth, his teammates voted him both team captain and Most Valuable Lineman. On the ice, Jim earned All-Conference honors as a junior defenseman and was both All-Conference and All-State as a senior. He led the 1989 Eagles’ hockey team to a remarkable 24-1 record, highlighted by a 23-game winning streak and a WIAA State Championship. Following graduation, Jim continued his hockey career at St. Norbert College, where he was a four-year starter, two-time Most Valuable Defenseman and team captain. His passion for both sports transitioned into a 25-year coaching career, spanning from high school hockey at Appleton United to multiple youth sports in Alpharetta, Ga., where he resides. He recently completed his football coaching career by helping lead his son, Ryden, and his youth football teams to two State Championships.
Shawn Carter, a 1991 Northland Pines High School graduate, earned multiple letters in football, hockey and track. In football, Shawn was the starting quarterback his sophomore and junior seasons, and second-team All-Conference both years. In hockey, he played his freshman through junior seasons, and as a junior, he was a co-captain, conference player of the year and first-team All-State. His proudest moment was during his sophomore season, when he was a member of the Eagles’ 1989 State Championship hockey team. Shawn went on to play hockey his senior year in the USHL for the Omaha Lancers and then played for the University of Wisconsin Badgers from 1991-’96. He graduated with a business degree, but was fortunate enough to continue his hockey career for another 13 years. He played in the IHL/AHL for six years in North America, with stops in Orlando, St John’s, Newfoundland and Houston. He also played overseas in Germany for seven years with stops in Augsburg, Mannheim and Nuremberg, finishing his hockey career in 2009. Shawn currently resides in Katy, Texas, with his wife, Kim, and their son, Hudson. They continue the love of sports with their son as he plays football, basketball, track and baseball.
Jinelle Zaugg, a 2004 Northland Pines High School graduate, was a three-sport athlete for the Eagles. She was a three-time MVP in cross country and a three-time MVP and four-time All-Conference selection in soccer. Jinelle played four years of boys high school hockey and in her junior and senior years the Eagles won back-to-back Lumberjack Conference championships. After high school, Jinelle played for the University of Wisconsin for four years. As a freshman, she earned All-Rookie Team honors. As a sophomore, she scored 24 goals and helped the Badgers win their first NCAA Championship with two goals in a 3-1 victory over Minnesota. Jinelle scored 29 goals her junior year with eight game-winning goals and helped her team win a second NCAA Championship in Lake Placid over Minnesota-Duluth. Jinelle finished her career at Wisconsin as the career leader in goals (89), power-play goals (29), game-winning goals (22) and games played (160). Jinelle made her first appearance with the U.S. women’s hockey team in 2006 and played in the 2007 World Championships in Winnipeg, earning a silver medal. She then earned a spot on the 2010 U.S. Olympic hockey team, competing in Vancouver and earning a silver medal. Jinelle has a passion for coaching youth through her hockey development camps, has coached Division 1 women’s hockey for over a decade and continues to develop and mentor collegiate and Olympic-level athletes. Jinelle and her husband, Michael (2004 NPHS graduate), have two boys and live in Minnesota
The 1986 Northland Pines High School boys golf team had an incredible fall season, winning the Lumberjack Conference championship, placing first in the Rice Lake Sectional tournament, winning the North-South State Golf Meet and finishing with an undefeated 65-0 record under coach Rollie Christensen. In addition to topping Phillips, Medford, Ashland, Tomahawk and Lakeland in the Lumberjack Conference, the Eagles also won the Ashland Invitational, Tomahawk Invitational and the T-Bird Invitational. Because the WIAA dropped fall golf in 1986, schools that still wanted to play fall golf held their own State Championship at the Ridges Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids. The Eagles advanced to State by winning the seven-team Sectional at Rice Lake with a 322, followed by Lakeland at 335, Ashland at 344 and Tomahawk at 345. At the eight-team State meet in less-than-ideal conditions, Northland Pines won the title with a 340, followed by Lakeland at 346, Ripon at 361 and Ashland at 363. Mike Collins of Pines was medalist with an 80. Runner-up medalist was Greg Gremban with an 85. Rounding out the scoring for Pines were Mark Richter with an 85 and Scott Gelling with a 94. The top individual averages during the season included Gremban at 37.1, Gelling at 38.6, Collins at 38.8 and Richter at 40.3. All four were named to the Lumberjack Conference all-conference team. Other golfers on the team included Doug Steiner, John Hletko, Frank Burchby, Jim Patten, Jarred Stiemke, Darrin Gremban, Bryan Hansen, Chuck Olson, Bob Maynard, Mike Willis, Darrin White and Jim Theissen. The junior varsity compiled an impressive 21-0 record. Greg Gremban was named team most valuable player, Collins served as team captain and Hletko was named most improved player for the 1986 squad.
